Playoffs are dumb? Are you suggesting they go back to how it was in 1968, one league winner and straight to the World Series (which was fine when you had eight- and ten-team leagues), or that there be no postseason at all? If you're just pointing out that what would appear to be the best teams don't always win, well, yes--that's what makes the postseason compelling. Dumb, I don't get.

Look at what that Achilles has to support.
When Howard made the last out, the place let loose with boos. It was a Philadelphia's cover version of the angry serenade Yankees fans gave to their team and their highest-paid star, Alex Rodriguez.
Like I was sayin'... the bad guys got screwed. Dance!
The Phillies were the best team in baseball this year. They had an historic pitching staff.
Verduch: no, no, and you don't use "an" there.

― incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:27 (twelve years ago) link
You don't think the Phillies had a/an historic pitching staff? Or at the very least, a/an historic front three (or all five starters)? Outside of Halladay I'm completely indifferent to the team, and I'd concede that point.
― clemenza, Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:30 (twelve years ago) link
yeah I think that pitching staff was pretty historic, but wtf @ Phillies fans for booing Ryan Howard, you guys don't deserve anything
― frogbs, Saturday, 8 October 2011 14:52 (twelve years ago) link
They had an historic pitching staff.
The Phillies had the lowest team ERA but were third in strikeouts and didn't have the lowest BAA, either. You need more than that to be historic, right? Or is he referring to the talent of the rotation?
― A Chuck Person's Guide to Mark Aguirre (Andy K), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:02 (twelve years ago) link
I don't know what his barometer is, but I quickly checked the total WAR for Halladay/Lee/Hamels against Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz in '95, and the Phillies were higher. And no one in the Phillies front five was lower than 1.7--I don't know how many teams you could find with a front five where that's true. (Listen to me, Mr. WAR.) I don't know...to get a little more old-school, they felt historic to me.
― clemenza, Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link
the thing about this phillies staff is that this is prob the best that they're going to be -- first of all they were all pretty much healthy this year, secondly altho doc, lee and hamels might repeat their years next season, it's highly doubtful that worley or even oswalt will be better
― yung huma (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:11 (twelve years ago) link
also if you're going by WAR, the 03 yankees & 02 d backs staffs both were equal, and the 97 braves were better
― yung huma (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:13 (twelve years ago) link
not that i necessarily disagree w/ you clemenza, just saying
― yung huma (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:14 (twelve years ago) link
Not that it matters, but by my calculations--I'm using Baseball Reference--all the teams you mentioned had a WAR from their front three of less than the Phillies' 19.6 this year. (The '02 Diamondbacks were basically Ruth, Gehrig, and three mediocrities.) I'm sure you can find some front threes that topped the Phillies, though. But I do think it would be hard to find a rotation five-deep where the fifth starter was as good as Worley.
― clemenza, Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:25 (twelve years ago) link
The '98 Braves are an interesting comparison. Their front five went 18-9, 20-6, 16-11, 17-8, and 17-3; three had ERAs under 3.00, one in the mid-3.00s, and one slightly above 4.00. (This was the McGwire/Sosa year.) Whether you do top three (19-6 > 13.7), top four (21.3 > 14.3), or top five (24.1 > 17.5), though--the order based on number of starts--the Phillies always beat them in WAR. And the '98 Braves were ESPN's pick a few years ago as the greatest rotation ever.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=list/greatestrotations
(One thing you can say about the '98 Braves that I'm pretty sure won't be true of this year's Phillies is that they had three Hall of Famers starting--two for sure, and very likely Smoltz too.)

― Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 8 October 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link
Isn't Oswalt a free agent after this year? Not sure what kind of contract he'll want, but letting him walk and going with Lee/Doc/Hamels/Worley should be plenty good enough to keep them competitive. They've got to save money somewhere -- Howard's extension starts next year! Their lineup needs an overhaul though, they're too old and slump-prone.
