I don't have much to say about this, but BP is having a draft party in NYC at Foley's on Thurs night:

I might show up after queer Canadian film at MoMA.

with nice charts

Russell Carleton summed up the situation last month in a Baseball Prospectus column entitled “The Annual Amateur Draft Guessing Game,” writing, “In the first round, we see some reasonable correlation between signing bonus (our proxy for how much teams value each player) and what they end up becoming. By the second round, teams are guessing.” And when the second round is over, there are 38 left to go.

A team with a history of picks that panned out might simply have had luck on its side, or a combination of luck and losing at the major-league level, which leads to high picks. (Sound familiar, football fans?) In some cases, of course, there’s skill behind the success, but drafting talent is tenuous: It can bleed away as the churn of scouts and executives redistributes front-office talent, funneling key personnel from standout teams into retirement or prominent positions with other organizations. In addition, it’s difficult to isolate the impact of player development; while we tend to credit or blame scouts for the success or failure of a team’s selections, the same player might succeed in one minor-league system but not in another, purely because of a difference in the quality of coaching.

Jason Parks @ProfessorParks
I hope the #Cubs take a position player at #4 (Gordon/Jackson) so we can all enjoy watching the Internet break.

By the second round, teams are guessing. And when the second round is over, there are 38 left to go.

it's kind of interesting to see who teams pick just as courtesies in the late rounds (like piazza back in the day). it's pretty standard practice to select the big league manager/coach/etc.'s kids -- the rockies took brody weiss, the royals took kevin kuntz, the tigers took torii jr, the yankees took pettite's nephew and the braves took kyle wren (although he can play a little) just last year.

also the blue jays totally go out of their way, all other things being equal, to get canadians (both late in the draft and as minor league free agents), which is pretty cool imo

http://blog.sfgate.com/giants/2014/06/05/draft-day-for-sf-giants-a-look-at-their-first-round-picks/

The Giants selected Vanderbilt right-hander Tyler Beede with the 14th overall pick.

He was a first-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2011 but chose to attend college.

Just spoke with John Barr, the Giants’ point man in the draft, and he said they’ve got Beede clocked as high as 96 with an impressive curve and will mix in an effective changeup. Barr said the Giants have followed Beede since high school and commended the kid’s confidence and courage for deciding to reject a big bonus out of high school to pitch in college.
