Literary Relevancy: Keepin' It Real

It is a city that has a history of being really revolutionary. The computer was made in Manchester, the suffragette movement began in Manchester, the best bands came from Manchester and now the best football teams come from Manchester – in my opinion anyway.

fucking despise manchester

you told me you'd only been there once on a school trip!
― ogmor, Sunday, 13 September 2015 19:44 (eight years ago) link
still recovering from watching a prog band from salford bare their northern sense of humour onstage recently
obviously it is a thoroughly reductive sentiment & present company excluded but i've posted enough on (lol) drownedinsound to get a flavour of the types who dwell there
i know london's thoroughly objectionable too etc but manchester seems uniquely self-aggrandising & self-mythologising
you're free to correct me on my blind metropolitan prejudices
― jordan amavero (imago), Sunday, 13 September 2015 20:43 (eight years ago) link
that's just lj being polite in present company, freed from ilafl's joyless, tiresome regime of memetic criticism he would find plenty to appreciate in the gary neville football hotel and the umist john robb memorial cultureplex
― Robert Kenedy Nunes do Nascimento (nakhchivan), Sunday, 13 September 2015 20:46 (eight years ago) link
imago, did you ever see this: http://fuc51.blogspot.co.uk/
should say that Manchester is a more interesting place than the self-aggrandising & self-mythologising might have you believe, imo

i would be interested in an ogmor thread recuperating manchester from its street team
― Robert Kenedy Nunes do Nascimento (nakhchivan), Sunday, 13 September 2015 21:02 (eight years ago) link
yes. let something good come from this contretemps

Liverpool's proselytizers have hardly been better than Manchester's. both have a lot to enjoy about them away from the banal nudnik narratives tho

that quote was from a guardian article about a football themed play which even the most generous reader would struggle to interpret as anything other than risible proletkult written for a hypothetical, probably non-existent audience of teenagers with £6 aguero haircuts who can't think of anything better to do than be patronized by morons in municipal arts centres
re the suffragette part.......controversial web tome wikipedia isn't providing a lot of evidence for manchester's singular role in the suffragette movement, is the author just getting confused with chartism and all of that?
― Robert Kenedy Nunes do Nascimento (nakhchivan), Sunday, 13 September 2015 21:34 (eight years ago) link
no, the Pankhursts were a Mancunian family
of course, the Pankhursts were the main motor for taking the women's suffrage movement away from its working class/Labour movement roots and then for cutting a deal to support the government's war propaganda in exchange for the franchise but hey

what would the American equivalent of Manchester be? Chicago?

Chicago feels like a good fit in some ways - chippiness towards larger more feted metropolitan rival especially

― jordan amavero (imago), Sunday, 13 September 2015 21:47 (eight years ago) link
we could all create sock accounts with generic monosyllabic male first names (from Manchester) and have fake chat threads on ILE
― sarahell, Sunday, 13 September 2015 21:48 (eight years ago) link
that doesn't quite equate to 'the suffragette movement began' there though, eg if one wants to be foundational 'The inaugural meeting of the Women's Franchise League (WFL) was held on 25 July 1889, at the Pankhurst home in Russell Square' so say it played a crucial role, 'had roots in' etc, it's all rather unnecessary lily gilding

Pies and Prejudice: In Search of the Northhttps://books.google.co.uk/books?isbn=0091910234Stuart Maconie - 2008 - HumorIn the Gulags and the Killing Fields, in Berlin and Budapest and the rice fields of China. And if communism began in Manchester then maybe Morrissey was right ...
so it is close to Chicago's crappy kraut cuisine

city state of manchester corp has always had a strong marketing dept, owen hatherley would have you believe the whole 80s scene was a scheme to drive up property prices orchestrated by tony wilson. after the mini riots they had their http://i1129.photobucket.com/albums/m516/Martinelli87/Chester.jpg~original guff out everywhere almost immediately, apparently they had it all ready to roll in the event of any threat to the brand. not to say you can't join in w yr own mythologising of manchester of course

I've been noticing how much Germany has contributed to terrible American culture thanks to a typically on point nakh thread.
― mattresslessness, Sunday, 13 September 2015 21:55 (eight years ago) link
manchester's relationship w its peripheral towns is unusual and somewhat fractious so generally their legacies are kept distinct but bolton's blackout crew did appear in the manchester day parade one year iirc
― ogmor, Sunday, 13 September 2015 21:56 (eight years ago) link
I didn't realize how many of these krauts our country suffered from until both nakh and Tom Smith from TLASILA both pointed out that German-Americans make up 15.2% of the US population
― sarahell, Sunday, 13 September 2015 21:58 (eight years ago) link
I'm sure there are some good ones, but we should consider shipping a lot of them back where they came from
beware the german menace
― mattresslessness, Sunday, 13 September 2015 21:59 (eight years ago) link
we had it right back in the day. they've been pulling the wool over our eyes for the past 70 years imo
― sarahell, Sunday, 13 September 2015 22:01 (eight years ago) link
lol ogmormanchester's many towns in one city aspect is a lot more interesting than trying to make the cities of manchester and salford into freestanding global enterprise monolith duplex or whatever
― Robert Kenedy Nunes do Nascimento (nakhchivan), Sunday, 13 September 2015 22:03 (eight years ago) link
German-Americans are 'the largest self-reported ancestry group' in the United States, and just think of all the ones who are too embarrassed to admit they're German.
― Fields of Fat Henry (Tom D.), Sunday, 13 September 2015 22:07 (eight years ago) link
aren't they kinda like the eyeties and are very proud of where they're from despite the fascism? isn't the problem that they're not embarrassed enough?
― sarahell, Sunday, 13 September 2015 22:11 (eight years ago) link
there's plenty of radical women in manchester's history besides the pankhursts, campaigners have keenly felt the relative lack of self-mythologising in this area and so there has been a #womanchester campaign to get a statue erected in the city centre, some sort of vote has been taking place
― ogmor, Sunday, 13 September 2015 22:13 (eight years ago) link
that's quite different from trying to provincialize a national movement with disparate sources via a specious local heritage industry origin myth of course
― Robert Kenedy Nunes do Nascimento (nakhchivan), Sunday, 13 September 2015 22:17 (eight years ago) link
