It's a conversation. If you can't imagine what the norms for that are, may I refer the reader to the mIRC era or whatever your preferred online dosage was. Mine was chatrooms, which is what slack basically is as far as I can tell?

Thanks for the info.

Ffs I didn't even know the admin thread existed until yesterday, this is a lot of meta.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:04 (two years ago) link
Still can't find out how to join it.
― we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:05 (two years ago) link
Because that's perhaps what irks me most about it: if it's so public and open to any ilxor who wants to be on it, then why have some of us been kept in the dark about it?
I'm not on there, but the slack was advertised publicly on threads back when it was created I believe? Fair enough not everyone reads every thread, but don't think there was any effort for anyone to be kept in the dark.
― Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:06 (two years ago) link
Yet no one will tell me how to join it.
― we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:07 (two years ago) link
Lmfao
should we just delete ilx and refer every1 to the slack?
― brimstead, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:23 (two years ago) link
You see? Keep posting "just come join the Slack" and "it's actually not mostly about dunking on people" and then don't give any further information. Really inspires confidence that it's not just some cliquish BS.
― we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:27 (two years ago) link
I dunno how to join either, as I said, I didn't join. Just saying it wasn't created in secret.
― Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:29 (two years ago) link
yeah sorry, given some of the personal stuff i’ve put on slack vs. the current tenor here, i’m not sharing the link
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:32 (two years ago) link
Yeah, wasn't trying to single you out, Daniel, mostly just trying to figure out how to join it from in orbit and etc.
― we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:33 (two years ago) link
Ah, so it isn't a public Slack, then.
― we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:34 (two years ago) link
Feel free to enlighten me any time you want, or just keep doing this. I guess you're confident that everyone involved was using that channel as if it it were as visible as ILE?i mean it would be pretty dumb for people to say repeatedly that the slack was open to all and then make an assumption that stuff posted there would stay hidden forever. and i’m just going to say this once but this was all started by someone who was on the slack and from my perspective not adhering to community standards, who then chose to take their grievance back here and claim that no, it was in fact everyone else who was acting in bad faith.
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:36 (two years ago) link
You all seem to be willfully confusing secretive with people valuing their privacy.
― Yerac, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:36 (two years ago) link
reminds me of the controversy when 77 was first created
― aegis philbin (crüt), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:37 (two years ago) link
"It isn't a secret Slack, anyone can join."
"Actually we need to protect the privacy of everyone on the Slack."
lmao.

I'm not saying people should do anything except learn to keep their shit talk private if they want it to be private.
― ✖, Sunday, March 13, 2022 11:34 AM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink
This is a good point. It sucks to see someone get hurt as happened today.
― treeship., Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:41 (two years ago) link
i just want slack users to promise they'll post a lot to ilx too, because i really don't need to adopt another platform just to maintain the meager substitution for a social fabric that ilx gives me.

I agree, tbh, and no matter what the circumstances of how this all "got out of control," I'm more than a little flabbergasted that there are such conflicting opinions as to the nature of this Slack. Is it public and available to any ilxors? Is it invite-only? Can I get an invite if I promise to adhere to community guidelines? If not, why?
― we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:47 (two years ago) link
There's definitely a similarity to when 77 started. But one difference is that there was an explicit rule that you can't shit-talk another user who isn't on 77. (To be fair I'm pretty sure that rule was instated because people were absolutely doing this, but I think I joined 77 fairly late on so didn't really see it.)

It was basically private until an existing slack contributor had a drunken late night outburst and lashed out at several people and then deleted his inappropriate posts before most of the US woke up and logged back on iirc? And now he's mad at people on the slack for.............not being cool that, I guess?? I don't know why else he has gone around for weeks slyly mentioning it in many other threads and trying to get people stirred up. It's willfully disruptive and has directly resulted in people being hurt by passing conversation that's only still available because the internet is a curse.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:51 (two years ago) link
The slack and almost weekly zooms were posted about here multiple times two years ago near the beginning of the pandemic so that people could have a more freeform, less publicly displayed conversation. With any community that grows, evolves and builds trust in one another it sometimes will get a little more closed off. How the fuck is this difficult to understand in 2022?
― Yerac, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:52 (two years ago) link
sorry, i crossed with io.
I mean people search their name once they’re on there. They can find old convos
― treeship., Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:53 (two years ago) link
Anyway I mostly stopped posting on ilx because the same people are in a lot of threads and I didn't want to engage with them all the time and I've never figured out how to killfile. And also I love the real-time chat format.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:53 (two years ago) link

am i the same person as gyac?
Loooool I joined the slack halfway through its existence when everyone else was already there and it has literally never occurred to me to search for my name. That is an insane overly online thing to do imo.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:56 (two years ago) link
it is an insanely self absorbed thing to do.
― Yerac, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:57 (two years ago) link
I did that, because I caught wind that I was being discussed.
― aegis philbin (crüt), Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:01 (two years ago) link
I think it’s a very human thing to do. People care about their reputations. And also this is the very thing someone did yesterday that led to their feelings being hurt.
― treeship., Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:02 (two years ago) link
learned today that shit talk and gossip are natural things humans need to survive as social creatures but searching your name to see if people shit talked or gossiped about you is bizarre and deviant behavior
this whole thing is so stupid
― ✖, Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:04 (two years ago) link
humans are self absorbed, exhausting people, what else is new.
― Yerac, Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:05 (two years ago) link
I don't see why searching for yr dn is weird. I do it every so often to see if someone responded to me directly in a thread and I missed it. Like there are reasons to do so beyond mere self-absorption.

― Yerac, Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:09 (two years ago) link
1.the URL was posted early on and according to ... more ilx searching than many people would want to do:
https://poxyfule.slack.com/
2. how someone gets invited or added to it -- idk
3. someone who is clear on how someone can be added or invited to it should say something now, otherwise I am going to exercise some mod powers that show up in the Admin Log and this thread will be recursive lol
― sarahell, Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:10 (two years ago) link
I mean, I agree that people should have a place to talk about others, blow off steam, whatever. But having it be easily discoverable seems kind of careless. There are some fragile people out here on the ilxes.
― treeship., Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:11 (two years ago) link
Like if i was a student and had my friends over every night to swap stories about how annoying one of our classmates was, and then invited that classmate to one of these gatherings, that would suck. If he felt awkward or hurt by the discussion, it’s not his fault for having accepted the invitation.
― treeship., Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:13 (two years ago) link
thank you ILXOR Dan I.
― Gaz Coombes, Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:15 (two years ago) link
Not that it matters, as back channels have back channels
― Dan I., Sunday, 13 March 2022 17:15 (two years ago) link
not sure how often this needs to be repeated but the issue isn't the slack's discoverability, it's that a specific ilxor decided to act out a grudge against another ilxor by repeatedly drawing negative attention to the slack in such a way that a third ilxor (entirely unrelated to the beef in question) was drawn to look and got badly hurt
the specific ilxor exactly wanted something like this to happen and didn't give a tiny fvck abt the consequences to many others (including the third ilxor)
the specific ilxor is someone i've always got on with and in the past have had no personal issue with but they were absolutely and consciusly and deliberately stirring and got all this -- which is what they wanted -- as a way of "winning" an argument where they had in fact been the primary misbehaver

searching your name to see if people shit talked or gossiped about you is bizarre and deviant behavior
I think it's less bizarre and deviant than shit-talking people in closed environments, me
The world is clearly divided into gossip tops and gossip bottoms and neither side will ever understand each other
