Robert Grazer (xeernoflax.juno.com) who posted a coruscating dismissal of the rolling stones on 8/25/01 that lives on in aeternum

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 21:35 (nine years ago) link

but he is diegetic, considering his exact words were copied and posted here

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 21:38 (nine years ago) link

diegesis means slightly different things in different fields and afaict it does not have a clear meaning in message board studies yet, though 'robert grazer' is probably a hypodiegetic element since i invented him, or just not diegetic at all since most posters originally just thought i was robert grazer

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 21:48 (nine years ago) link

you aren't?

o.m.g. lol @ hurt butt (wins), Thursday, 22 January 2015 21:50 (nine years ago) link

well, i think we can work towards a definition of the term in message board studies --

if you use the definition from film studies, diegetic music's source is visible. While Robert Grazer on 8/25/01 did not post his enlightening opinions about the Rolling Stones on ilx himself, an exact copy of said opinions were posted. I see it as akin to someone playing a record onscreen -- an album by a band, if you will -- and that is the music we hear. Except in this case the album by a band is the text written by Robert Grazer on 8/25/01 about the overrated nature of a band which produced albums

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link

nous sommes tous robert grazer

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 21:57 (nine years ago) link

i like that this q posits the entirety of ilx as fiction

music or sound source doesn't strictly speaking need to be visible to be diagetic of course - i.e. the muzak in an elevator - it just needs to be motivated by something that makes sense in the world of the movie, rather than our world

i feel like the dutch threads that occasionally crash into site new answers feel non-diagetic

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:00 (nine years ago) link

yeah I mean really non-diegetic would be invisible to the players ie us

o.m.g. lol @ hurt butt (wins), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:01 (nine years ago) link

but visible to the audience ie....?

o.m.g. lol @ hurt butt (wins), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:02 (nine years ago) link

well, in the sense that we see the elevator, and it is ostensibly the source of the muzak, then idk if that's the best example

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:02 (nine years ago) link

luna

example (crüt), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:03 (nine years ago) link

it's more like:

couple sits down in seats after entering a concert hall and we hear Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries

vs.

couple are having illicit sex against a brick wall in an alley and we hear Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:05 (nine years ago) link

I see it as akin to someone playing a record onscreen -- an album by a band, if you will -- and that is the music we hear = to extend this dubious analogy then it would be like a miles davis track being played in a scene set in a parisian brothel while hardboiled expatriate narco detective robert grazer argues with the madame, only then at the end of the scene it's revealed that miles davis and friends were there all along in the corner, so at least initially extradiegetic since we are concerned not with truth but with phenomenal experience

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:06 (nine years ago) link

the imaginary people who shakey is talking to are extradiegetic

ilx posts with striking imagery

always loved in taxi driver where sport puts a record on and it's the taxi driver theme

o.m.g. lol @ hurt butt (wins), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:09 (nine years ago) link

b-b-but sarahell we see the concert hall, and it is ostensibly the source of the music!!

no, j/ks, yes i agree

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:09 (nine years ago) link

I'm saying the concert hall and the elevator (unless the music we hear is phenomenally different than what we would expect in terms of sound quality) = diegetic
symphonic recording of Wagner during alley fucking = non-diegetic

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:19 (nine years ago) link

since we are concerned not with truth but with phenomenal experience

yes, exactly. I mean, obviously we are seeing a pre-recorded representation of people in an elevator, or a nightclub, or a concert hall -- they aren't actually there, we aren't actually there. But it is a realistic representation -- a mimesis (is that the right term?) -- based on our experiences

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:21 (nine years ago) link

maybe an argument for dennis perrin to be counted as an extradiegetic character, or at least who i thought dennis perrin was, some sort of tryhard bill maher type of american late night tv comedy personality, whereas he is actually some random opinions4u type with 654 twitter followers

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:23 (nine years ago) link

I'd suggest that a c&p of a post or text counts as diegetic, esp. if the source is readily available through a search. I'd also suggest that a representation of the opinion of a person that only exists through the posts of another poster would be non-diegetic.

Maybe diegetic is the wrong term?

But I think dennis perrin and robert glazer would belong to one category and deej's world of young ppl and lj's gf would belong to another

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:27 (nine years ago) link

no not dennis perrin the twitter bro

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:28 (nine years ago) link

??

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:29 (nine years ago) link

the notion that someone with 2% of the twitter followers of 17 yr old chelsea youth team player dom solanke would deserve such sustained devotion from a message board poster is so implausible that we might as well say that 'imaginary entity presumably corresponding to the name dennis perrin' a controversial irish american comedian who recently got sued by an nfl player for calling him out as a spousal abuser on twitter before saying he got him confused with another player who looked like him, is an extradiegetic ilx poster

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:33 (nine years ago) link

[imaginary entity presumably corresponding to the name dennis perrin] will be familiar to most of the 5,216 registered users of ilx, so in a way he is more real or at least more important than the actual dennis perrin

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:34 (nine years ago) link

but if one of the 5,216 registered users was not familiar with "dennis perrin" other than as a source of twitter posts, one could easily verify through twitter that this "dennis perrin" exists outside of the asserted reality of the posters discussing him.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:37 (nine years ago) link

whereas lj's gf's various opinions about nominated tracks are totally unverifiable

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:38 (nine years ago) link

virtually nobody would bother to look it up because his c&ped tweets are so insipid, so for the thousands of other ilx readers who still think [imaginary entity presumably corresponding to the name dennis perrin] exists, he is an extradiegetic characte s as separate as all of the various iterations of [my gf] who have had their opinions on bands posted on ilx through the years

Hayat Boumkattienne (nakhchivan), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:45 (nine years ago) link

whether they would bother or not isn't the issue!

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 22 January 2015 22:46 (nine years ago) link

OK, brutally honest -- in the deep dark '80's I accompanied a nubile, mainstream young lady to a Lionel Richie concert for the most ulterior (or is that anterior) of motives. Thank god Tina Turner was opening up (this was immediately before her comeback) or I'd have fallen asleep entirely.

4. jaymc's "film critic friend"
Defining Characteristics: metaphorically stands in for ILXors pathological habit for using film critic quotes instead of stating their own thoughts
Most Famous Battle(s): being invoked by adamrl on the Capote thread
Humanizing Factor: is friends with jaymc, so is probably sweet like sugar pie
Secret Powers: too good to throw down in the low-down catty 300-plus-post battles
Weak Point/Guilty Pleasure/Kryptonite Analogue: ditto
Known Enemies: adamrl

“diegetic” concept makes more sense if one is just lurker/ audience/ reader of ilx, not character up on stage as well, not part of the ilx diegetic world (our shared purgatory)

if by "non-diegetic" we mean unseen character, referred to, discussed, or quoted by characters onstage, I’d say my fave in ilx history is mark s's "dr vick"

I like Wagner, to the point that I recently bought an old LP box set. There's something about the teutonic crashes and braying brass that sing to my northern soul. Every other composer sounds like a sissy.

Dear Dan Bunnybrain:
Thank you so much for your request to add me as your friend on MySpace. However, due to the large amount of requests I receive to be virtual friends with many worthwhile applicants as yourself, I must suspend adding you to my list for the time being. I will certainly reconsider the addition in a future date. Or you can simply remind me in a time frame no less than six months from now. Thank you very much for considering me, and I really wish you the best of friends. :)
