What a great call by Geelong CEO Brian Cook to say no to moving the Geelong v St Kilda match from Cat park to the DomeAss. Heaven forbid that St Kilda might actually have to face the elements and foreign conditions this season.

It would have been easy to take the filthy lucre and move the game to Melbourne but Cook has rewarded the City of Geelong and local (and interstate) Cat fans by holding on tight to our home ground advantage.

Many scribes don't get tired of writing that Geelong has no superstars but I beg to differ (funnily enough). We have two superstars, Brian Cook and President Frank Costa. These blokes are legends who have helped Geelong through some mighty tough times with vision and loyalty to the GFC.

These men see the bigger picture and this decision by CEO Cook is a brilliant one in my view, as was the decision to stick by Thompson when he didn't exactly have the runs on the boad when the hysterical REB's out there started to call for his head.

If you think good administrative leadership doesn't count for much in AFL football, have a look at how Richmond and Hawthorn are travelling at the moment..I know what I'd rather have.

Well done Brian Cook. We have to win that match against the Saints and we've got a better chance of doing so at Cat Park.

regards,

REB

Ian must breathe a sigh of relief every time this happens, when he knows he always has his own club to fall back on when he needs to find another match to fill a shortfall in fixturing at Telstra.

Carlton play four more matches at the Oo. He has four days to shift the Swans. Freo won't pull a big enough crowd to make the exercise worthwhile. My tip to Kangas fans: if you turn up to Octopus hoping to see your team play Carlton on 17 July, most likely all you'll see is a hand-painted cardboard sign on the gate saying the game has been moved to 'Collo's Colon'.

If not North, Melbourne in the second last round.

Remember where you read it first.

Good administration can't determine how a team plays on the field, but bad admin certainly can.

Agreed

REB

I saw Brian Cook a couple of weeks back, and he was explaining to Clinton 'grabass' I think it was, about how they actually make more money from filling Skilled Stadium with 25,000-27,000 then 50 or 60,000 at Telstra Dome.

He's done a great job at Geelong and even if they do make more money at Telstra Dome, I'd suggested getting a home game for CAT supports will go a long way - further than extra money in the coffers. Especially as your TV deals there are so rank.

Clinton Grabass LOL. As for our TV 'coverage', well, like you, I love my Foxtel...

REB, youll be playing them in a final there, so why not

jsa, Monday, 28 June 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you actually have to win a certain amount of matches to make the finals Jase and we've already played them there twice for two losses. If we play them there a third time there and lose again we've made it harder to get into the eight and created a monkey for our backs.

September is not a good time to have a monkey on your back.

Agreed whole heartedly with you REB. Baytec/Skilled/Shell/Kardinia Park must hold a definate hom advantage - it must help Geelong knowing the wind and the conditions, and it must put fear into the opposition players knowing their belongings have probably been flogged from their changerooms...

...nah that's McHales Navy Park you must be thinking of Benno :)

McHale's Navy Park?

Mick would have to be Lt Binghamton, Bucks is Carpenter, Rhys Shaw is Ensign Charlie Parker.

Great analogy and who was the visiting old fart they were all scared of? Can't remember his name but that could be Mr Ed!! Come on Fred if you can remember those three you must be able to remember him! lol

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ Fred, you must be about 90 LOL.

The visiting head honcho's name was Benson. I had to Google the show's name to find it. I also found out Ernie Borgnine (who played McHale) is 87 this year.

Which makes my 47 quite spring chicken-ish. I must have caught the very last run of the series, at the start of the 70s. IIRC it was on straight after Get Smart.

The trouble with these youngun's they don't understand nor appreciate a good comedy!

I thought Ernest Borgnine passed away sometime in the last 12 months?

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that you mention it I do vaguely remember hearing he had died, but somebody forgot to email Bill Gates cos I can't find it anywhere on the Net.

According to his IMDB biog, he was married five times (his third wife was Ethel Merman, it lasted a month plus a day) but he married his fifth wife in 1972 and they were still going at last update. Which kinda makes Ern the Dale Kickett of Hollywood.
