Lions and Cats

Good game REB, but awfully hard on the heart.

As long as ya CATS don't dwell on the loss for too long and look at the positives they will bounce back next year and be an even tougher better side.

If we had lost by 20 points and hadnt been so close we wouldnt be so shattered. It was because we were so close we are dissapointed. But as soon as we get a win in next season all will be forgotten.

It must be particularly gutting for Cats fans knowing that the team that beat them has some unfair advantages. Port will need to beat a team that has some very good players in it because the AFL has given them a leg up. Good luck to them as at least they are operating on the same rules as the rest of the teams.

If the Lions were operating under the same rules as everbody else there would be no way they would be going for number four. They still probably would have won two and been considered a very good team, but not four.

Chrisso, choke on your sour grapes. You know as well as everyone else that the Salary Cap Concessions are NOT the reason this side is still together and playing brilliant football. Don't you understand the concept of salary CUTS to keep the team together - loyalty!

As long as the fixtures are rigged around blockbuster for your lot and others such as Collingwood. As long as Victorian teams travell interstate less than non-victorian teams. As long as Victorian clubs get fund from the AFL's Competitive Fund. As long as teams that earn the right host finals at the home ground but have to play in Victoria to appease contractual arrangements made to suit Victorians there will never ever ever be a level playing field.

You're just pissed off because we beat you fair and square in 2001, and that you've gone down in a screaming heap this year. Get over it son, put your energy into positive reinforcement of your Club not denegration of another club.

We haven't won our fourth yet, just earned the right to play for it. Whether we do or not as far as I'm concerned is immaterial, this group of players has done everything possible to stay together to give themselves a chance, and if they don't happen to win I'm not going to spend the next four years pulling Port to pieces for puerile reasons.

Feeling lower than a Snake's belly today. This match was worse than the Port flogging because we kicked ourselves out of it, plain and simple. What is worse is the fact that our two most experienced players, Graham and Riccardi were the major offenders. I have never seen Peter Riccardi display such poor foot skills. The end could be near for Riccardi because unlike Graham, we have others of his type who have or are almost ready to step up.

So far on the radio all I've heard about the game is how poorly Brisbane played. Sheesh, would it hurt to give us a LITTLE credit? The blues I'm feeling right now hopefully won't last too long after all, if someone had told me we would be a kick and half away from the grand final in February I would have taken it that's for sure.

While we didn't grab the flag, something was achieved this season that should benifit the Cats immensely. First up we have regained some respect for our football team. Dickheads like Robert KnoWalls won't be predicting a 16th finish for the Cats next season. More importantly, a Brisbane v Geelong match is no longer the walk up start to the Lions it was a recently as Round 13. We have proven we can take it right up to the Lions. There is one less side in the comp that is not in awe of them...the end of the reign is nigh..but I've said that once before.

If you are a betting man (or woman) I reckon the $2.40 on the Power is a pretty good bet. Brisbane with one day less to prepare and carrying a few injuries....this could be the year the Lions limp home a loser on Grand Final day. Port are twice the side Collingwood were in the last two seasons and Essendon foolishly played injured players in the 2001 decider.

Brisbane are a great side but if they can beat Port, that would be the greatest triumph of the four IMNSHO.

regards,

REB

When teams are so close together $800K means a heck of a lot. The salary cuts don't cut as deep as they should when you can give an extra $100K to six players. It's plain logic Lucy, not sour grapes. Please don't confuse the two.

I'm not sour because we were the last team to win a flag before this AFL created domination started. There are other teams who should feel sour, though.

chrisso (chrisso), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Chrisso, who would you rather have seen win the last two grand finals? The team that lost them?

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 20 September 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Good point!

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 20 September 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Fred, if the Pies won it whilst playing under the same conditions as everyone else, then good luck to them.

chrisso (chrisso), Monday, 20 September 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair go chrisso, it must be very unfair to play 19 of your games at home, be caugght rigging the salary cap and get no fine, then get caught rigging it with internet sites aqnd still getting away with it.

Essendon get a pretty good run, so i wouldnt complain

ps latest rumour out of melb dew swapped for mark johnson, surely essendon arent that stupid!!

jsa, Monday, 20 September 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard that Matty Knights will take Clarkson's place next year LOL.

Dew & Johnson: Looks like a great deal for Port at first glance, but if it has legs Essendon will ask for a 4th or 5th round draft pick as well to make up for the fact that Dew is older or that Johnson is a club B&F winner (which I don't think Dew is), and whoever they pick up with that #50 or #60 pick will be much more important to Essendon than any mid-ranking player they swap one of their MRPs for.

Essendon have been doing this for the last few years and mainly doing it well, pulling high-profile draft deals which improve their position in the draft by just enough to make a difference, and recruiting better kids accordingly.

I'll tell you that it would be much better to have a genuine home ground advantage like Footy Park, Subiaco, The Gabba etc, yhan to play on grounds that everyone plays a lot on. Where is our home ground advantage when we play Carlton, Collingwood, Western Bulldogs Richmond, Saints, Kangaroos etc, etc? I wish we had a fortress, that would be lovely. This myth that we get an advantage by playing so many home games is a joke.

Do your homework on the website statement. Very, very ill-informed comment.

chrisso (chrisso), Monday, 20 September 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact you dont have to travel is where the advantage is, the fact you have your supporters there every week is an advantage open your eyes

jsa, Monday, 20 September 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

This whole mass-debate is turning into a yawn the size of a dozen MCGs.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 20 September 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Essendon have been doing this for the last few years and mainly doing it well"

Essendon may have done well with recycled players but at what cost? I reckon Essendon have suffered because of the recycling program. Better to spend a year at 14th and get some extra youth into the squad. It's not much good finishing in the middle all the time.

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Essendon are very happy with Johnson's attitude, the straw thast may have broken the camels back could have been the Tarrant incident. WTF was he doing out at 4am?

Your mob could have had the money to pay 6 or 7 guys some extra $ if they hadn't wasted it on Mercuri.

Poor management of your Salary Cap is Essendon's crime and the punishment is to middle of the road.

Westener (Westener), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Here ya go Chrisso, something else to complain about.

A good idea from Leppa!

You will get no argument from me there, it was a very bad mistake. Westy, I'm talking about the extra money Brisbane is allowed to spend on players. If we had an extra $800K to spend it wouldn't have hurt us nearly as much as it did.

chrisso (chrisso), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The Golden Asterix

There's no pride in Brisbane town
It's wearing thin, this cap of gold
The AFL pays for our history
Like the West Coast Eagles of old
We don't answer to fugg all
Pay Lions, pay the Lions
They'll win another four
As long as they cry poor
