No comment on Pike: Lions
September 28, 2004

THE Brisbane Lions today refused to comment on a report four-time premiership player Martin Pike was involved in an altercation with the AFL club's CEO Michael Bowers.

Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper said Pike reportedly head-butted Bowers outside a Brisbane pub at 4.30am (AEST) yesterday.

Sources told the newspaper Bowers required treatment for a cut to the nose.

The confrontation came after an animated discussion between the pair.

But a Lions spokesman said today the club would be making no comment on the incident.

Looks like Pike could be looking for another club, he is off contract.

Wouldn't it be funny if Sheedy headed off to the Trading Bench with the intention of trading, say, Mark Johnson for Martin Pike(probably raise the average IQ of both clubs).

Would Johnson immediately become an assclown drug cheat and Pike a player to be revered and bringing decades of experience to THE CLUB.

Oh the permutations are endless. The possibilities boundless.

Are you saying MJ is dumb or are you just a fan of Piggy Muldoon and are fond of using his lines?

You would have to be one of the few that remember Piggy Muldoon on this forum.

But no, it's just a line that can be thrown in to try to get people to exercise the grey matter. But you gotta admit, IT is a thought.

Pike might be a handful to manage but there could never be a question over his endevour or committment. Love the way he goes about his footy.

Was at a sportsman's night a couple of months back. Guest speaker was Peter Bell. Told a terrific story about Martin Pike and his off season training habits when they were at North Melbourne. Gotta have a laugh and admire his ingenuity.

He's a bit before my time but I lived in NZ for 18 months and that line was mentioned a few times. Bloody Kiwis.

The playing future of Pike, Darryl White and Shaun Hart are being reviewed by the club this week.

Pike declined to comment while Bowers denied the incident.

On Monday, Pike also returned fire at Collingwood's Shane Wakelin – describing his criticism of Alastair Lynch as disgraceful.

A furious Pike called the Herald Sun to defend his teammate after an ugly grand final brawl.

Shane Wakelin's brother Darryl, Port Adelaide's full-back, slugged it out with Lynch in the first quarter.

Shane accused Lynch of having taken "cheap shots" at opponents all through his career.

"To have a crack at Alastair Lynch, everyone in the football world knows that they are weak pricks," Pike said.

"Not the one that played in the grand final, the other one, the loud mouth who has done nothing [and] Alastair is not going to comment about it, but I will, tell 'em to get f....."

Pike said Lynch, who retired after the grand final, deserved better from Shane Wakelin, his opponent in the previous two grand finals.

"The Collingwood f...... idiot wants to mouth off after a grand final he hasn't even played in," said Pike.

The fallout from the grand final loss extended to coach Leigh Matthews and Jason Akermanis.

Matthews said it was "tacky" of Akermanis to reveal Lynch's retirement plans in his Courier Mail column before the 36-year-old had broken the news himself.

It's getting sad now. What's going on up there?

Seem to recall Shane having a whinge at Tony Lockett too.

If Pike gets the chop from Brisbane, at his age there won't be another club. It all seems very similar to his exit from the Roos. He seems to get involved in off-field personality clashes, which is surprising because he's always played his football within the rules as far as I can remember. Maybe when he's playing he pays more attention to staying sober.

One other impression re-confirmed: Pike may not quite have his lookalike Kerry Packer's money (he might have to stay on the BL payroll another year for that, eh chrisso), but he does have The Great Warthog's foul mouth.

This statement alone explains so much, chrisso I apologise for anything derogatory I've said to you. Anyone who can live with a bunch of kiwis for that long and survive deserves sympathy! lol

I am disappointed that so much is being aired publically, I guess no club is perfect!

Still I think Pikey should have done a better job, fancy only giving BOwers a cut on the nose, when he had the opportunity to break it!!!

I think most Australians saw Piggy M as just another noisy ADD-addled State Premier.

He singlehandedly swung Australia from sending out the necktie party for Greg Chappell back to supporting him after the Underarm Incident, with his comment about it being appropriate that Australia were wearing yellow.

xpost Lucy: Not a fan of the Bowmeister's work I take it?

You're not wrong, you need to have a thick skin if you're an Aussie living over there, every opportunity they got they were into us. A bit like us really.Lol. I was happy to take their money, so I put up with 'em.
