Yikes!! Saints looking a bit scary :o

In a recent ILA thread somebody asked the question 'who is going to defeat West Coast for the flag?' and after recent results it would appear that St Kilda is the great white hope for the Victorian football public.

I reckon St Kilda's destructive (ie on the scoreboard destructive) style of play could well overwhelm teams like Adelaide, Sydney, The Roos and Geelong who are all having to work a lot harder for their goals (that's if Geelong in fact wake up from their current slumber to make the eight at all DOH).

With so many blokes out for extended periods at times this season, many of St Kilda's players are not tired but rather champing at the bit and should improve with a few games under their belt. A full strength St Kilda side will be mighty hard to stop next month.

Now as for Geelong, we will come good surely..hmm, who do we have next week (with our fantastic 2-7 Friday night record at the Domea55)...ST KILDA...YIKES...put me down as one scaredy cat!! DOH.

Melbourne go out and 'show the flag' in classic Dermie-approved fashion, targetting the opposition's injured players, but when the bullshit finishes and the game starts they are nowhere to be found. They finish with all the injuries and a fearful flogging.

I laughed till I cried.

I was too busy crying to laugh.

The Saints where very impressive and even their defence looked good.

I still think the Eagles have a better range of talent regarding tall options up forward but on their day there is not much in it. Same could be said of the on-ballers, but in defence and in the ruck, Eagles leave them for dead.

It would be interesting if this was our GF combination and it poured rain, the Eagles hardness would still win it IMHO.

True BB and I think the Saints like of the rarified atmosphere of the Dome will even out with the Eagles having to travel half way round the world to get to the MCG.

Should be a good final.

Some of you people here are assuming the GF is a fait accompli and have already pencilled in Eagles and Saints.

I wish it were that easy.

I still have a small doubt as to the Eagles finishing the season with momentum and being able to go all the way.

However, I do think that Worsfold is the most astute coach of the more favoured teams and could be the decisive factor.

That said, how much am I looking forward to Eagles/Doggies match this weekend? After watching most of the game Vs Brisbane on Saturday night and seeing the Dogs in action, it should be a ripper.

I still think the saints are vulnerable in the coaching dept, not sure thomas has what it takes to win a GF. Plus i still think back to the crows vs saints game when they crows belted them with physical footy.

I think maybe the swans can go all the way, they can adapt their game and have the shutdown players to worry the cows and the eagles.

"I still think the Eagles have a better range of talent regarding tall options up forward but on their day there is not much in it". You must be kidding BB, who have the eagles got that compares to reiwolt, hamill, kositske, and gherig

Tell him Westie !!!!

jsa I don' think even the most one eyed saint would say hamill has contributed since his return, he is yet to play more than 60% of a game. Fraze is fine if his match with the full back suits him, he has never been a factor against Brisbane re Mal Michael. Saint Nic was great on Saturday but more than half of his 22 touches were in the back half, especially in the first half, if I'm the opposing coach I'd take that. Kositske has to play in the ruck (and has poor ruck work) and a guy like Cox for the Eagles kicking goals, running forward etc, keeps him more accountable in defence.

I'd still be very happy to go with Lynch, Cox, Hanson, Staker, Gardner.

Big Bird (Big Bird), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

Its a matter of opinion, but id take saints forward cattle over the west coast

Lynch, is bordering on useless, never seen a big bloke drop so many mark (excluding turdstans)
Hanson, whilst having huge potential hasnt done much
I wouldnt have thought gardiner has played any more than hamill prolly less
Staker, surely you jest BB

The eagles will rely on the only advantage they have over other teams and thats the midfield, its such an advantage that it can cover what i see as an ok defence and an ordinary forward line, but look out if one of those midfielders goes down prior to september.

jsa, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

Being a bit harsh on Hamill BB. Saturday was the first time since about round 4 that he has played more than 0% of a game.

If St Kilda don't at least make the Grand Final, 'Cornflakes' is toast. He may still be if they do make it and get thrashed.

The punters all like to talk up St Kilda after their 5 game winning streak against quality opposition. They have been strong and fearless against the Dogs, Blues, Tiges, Pies and Dees.

Where were they earlier in the season against the better teams that now make up the eight.

Time will tell.

5pm GF Day.

Westener (Westener), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Fair go Westy, the Egirls couldn't beat the Pies could they? It is the manner of the victories I'd suggest rather than the star factor or lack of. Be afraid, very afraid.

Still take the Eagles boys over the Saints jsa, I think they work harder to keep the ball in the forward 50 too.

I agree with you Fred, the biggest "scandle" in football is why hav'nt the St Kilda Football and Social club, with their list, done more in the past three years.

Don't tell me about being "one kick from the GF", they limped into last years finals, and should have beaten Port but missed opportunities and did not have the structure to capitalise on all their possession. They have a great team, they need a better coach. When things start to go bad on the field Thomas gets a fatalistic look on his face and does little effective coaching.

Yep agree with this, I'm not convinced Thomas is the right one and still not convinced about Mark Thompson either. Geelong should be doing better with the list they have.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

Hey REB ill swap ya williams for Thompson???

jsa, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

Don't do it REB Williams is a maniac!

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

maniac?? thats the first ive heard of that, plenty of other words describe him better.

Eagles got beaten by Pies and Swans. Both played very well on the day and deserved their vicory. Pies very well coached that day and Swans very disciplined and played their ground to perfection.

My point, REB, is that Saints are being talked up by all and sundry including the very same people who, earlier, were selling them off. I do not say the Eagles WILL win the flag or play against the Saints or Crows or Swans.
I do say that they ARE a big show and time will tell.
