Sorry Gorillas, you can't zone off your opposition and run forward of the ball because you no longer control the game like you did in your heyday. If you want to make the eight this year you will have to pay some respect to your opponents and do them and your fans the courtesy of manning up.

The bad news for Brisbane is that the Cats still had plenty out, Kingsley, Johnson, Wojincski, Kelly, Harley, Riccardi just to name a few and despite the winning margin, I don't think we were all that special today.

REB

Congratulations REB your team played well. Yes we looked less than ordinary, but I still take heart form the fact it's round 1, new guys are getting experience at that level, it's obviously going to take more than a pre-season for the young and old to feel confident with each other. Ya man Egan did a job on Brown - I actually didn't realise he was still on the ground in the second half, think he must have been reading and believing his own press coverage!

Returns for us:- we still have Keating, Copeland, Selwood, Chris Scott, Joel MacDonald, Beau McDonald and eventually, Richard Hadley and Nigel Lappin.

But after all that I DONT CARE - the footy is back and I love watching my team play.

Has Thompson stopped whining yet? :)

Corbyn’s press chief is a former radio journalist and veteran campaigner from Liverpool – and, like him, was a leading architect of the Stop the War coalition. She has described the Corbyn team as “a coalition of the willing and the available” and “like Stop the War with bells on”. Nolan, formerly known as Carmel Brown, is respected by Westminster hacks as a serious operator. In her spare time she researches the fates of Liverpool men who served in the Second World War.

Her daughter, Hope, is credited with coming up with the name for George Galloway’s anti-war party in 2004. Then aged just eight, she picked two names: one was the “Give All Your Sweeties to Hope Party”. The other was Respect.

New band of the week: Kero Kero Bonito (No 33)

They’re not part of the PC Music collective, as far as we can tell, but with their neon-pink hyper-pop they might as well be
Kero Kero Bonito

Hometown: South London.

The lineup: Sarah Bonito, Gus Bonito, and Jamie Bonito.

The background: When we featured the bright, fizzing hyper-pop of Sophie in this column back in August, we didn’t know about PC Music. Is it, as Pitchfork wondered recently, “a label, a scene, a subgenre, a red herring?” And if it is a label, who or what comprises its roster? Hard to tell, amid all the pseudonyms and aliases (easyFun, Princess Bambi, Lipgloss Twins, Kane West). Suffice to say, if you buy into the music you’ll love the daft, dizzy mythology surrounding the characters involved, which delights in sending out confusing signals and represents a fun, imaginative alternative to the normal, boring routines involved in being part of a record company.

Kero Kero Bonito aren’t part of the PC Music collective – we don’t think – but they have a similarly bold, neon pink aesthetic, and they just as ingeniously create their own world, with its own visual and sonic senses. They apparently met via a Japanese expatriate community bulletin board, and it soon became evident that they shared a determination to make music out of bits of 8-bit, J-pop, dancehall and rap. Naming themselves after “Japanese frog onomatopoeia” and “a culinarily useful fish”, they decided to be a trio, made up of a “bilingual ultrapop star” and a MIDI production squad. They write songs (playground chants, really, or potential kids’ TV jingles) about 70s sweets and such. But often behind the cute exterior there are, as on their Intro Bonito mixtape, concise, pop-haiku-like explorations of the strangeness of babies, ecological issues or societal expectations of women. “It’s often said, I should get some girly hobbies instead, but that thought fills me with dread / I’m not into sewing, baking, dressmaking, not eating, bitching, submitting,” Sarah Bonito “sings” on Sick Beat, a term used advisedly for her playfully bored monotone: think Daphne & Celeste trapped in a Manga cartoon with the cast of Tomb Raider.

It would be easy to dismiss this stuff as juvenile dementia, but songs this simple actually require a particularly devious intelligence. There is a spaciousness here that recalls early, primitive synthpop, when it was a novelty and evoked the future, but also a precision and attack that make you think of Crystal Castles, if they were five and high on Haribo. There’s a sinister edge to some of the tracks – Cat vs Dog offers an alternative to pet worship: “There’s nothing I like more than a mutt getting whacked with my baseball bat / that’ll stop you barking in the morning … I wanna murder moggies … brains everywhere” – and at times a poignancy. Flamingo is like the theme tune to the Clangers recreated by twisted computer gamers. It’s the musical equivalent of Marmite, or an equally divisive sugary confection version of same.

The buzz: “Kero Kero Bonito … enchant you with their cute imagery and sharp songwriting.”

The truth: Pump up the jam – candy-flavour, please, with lashings of extra synthetic flavouring.

Most likely to: Make you sick, in a good way.

Least likely to: Make you murder a moggy.

What to buy: New self-released track, Build It Up, is available now.

File next to: Sophie, QT, Felicita, AG Cook.

Links: soundcloud.com/kerokerobonito.

Ones to watch: Royce Wood Junior, Amber Run, Esco Williams, Ice Choir, Kid Astray.

How come we got all the famous WIMMEN virtuosos, hey? Fifty years ago, it was only men lie Van Cliburn and Gould and Rubenstein.

Look at the line up now -- all WIMMEN and all with names that are hard to PRONOUNCE.

And they're good-looking too, even sexy. Before, if you wanted to see wimmen perform you had to go to an opera and watch fat sopranos wearing horned helmets in Wagner.

I'm not complaining though. This is one commie/moslem/fascist/socialist/moral-nihilist piece of evolution I approve of. Except that Khatia Buniatishvili and Yuja Wang should perform in bikinis. They wouldn't lose any dignity and they'd gain the undying admiration of some of us.

martha jane 5 months ago

+Robert Maxwell Yuja and Khatia both dress like streetwalkers, this gown was mild compared to what she normally wears, at times they both dress like they are going to appear at the strip club, I guess if you are not the most accomplished player you have to compensate.

Robert,
Classical music is not sophisticated, it is just another form of music, it's all subjective, if you hear something that makes you inquire about the artist, that alone is enough to show you have an ear for whatever music. Classical music has nothing to do with class, the classical field is ripe with homosexuality, drug heads, promiscuity and money laundering, pedophilia etc, much like the industry, they put on this show, but it is a low brow, back biting, cut throat organization, when they stress NFP that is BS, the mgmt and top people steal the money and it is lucrative, they have people who give lots of money to these overpaid clowns, then swear they are in need of funds but steal from the real talent the orchestra. Anyway i digress, what i was getting at originally is that it is alright to dress sexy but you don't have to be low brow as the aforementioned are, believe it or not it is offensive to the audience, players and women in general who have fought to be recognized and respected for their talent, if you are playing for Hugh Hefner, or Joe Francis great, but otherwise dress to be admired and respected for your talent, save the whore gowns for after the concert, people pay to see talent, not an escort ad. take care that's all.

martha jane 4 months ago

You are the element that makes classical music, assical music. Now go off yourself, your low brow typing is not lucid or needed, there are enough vodka,Baijiu and beer curb drinkers in the industry like you, know nothing of music but relate to the meat in the window, get lost.

A 10-year-old Afghan boy who was declared a hero after fighting the Taliban has been shot dead by insurgents while on his way to school.

Wasil Ahmad, who fought the Taliban alongside his uncle on many occasions, was killed on Monday near his home in Tirin Kot, capital of the southern Uruzgan province, said deputy police chief Rahimullah Khan.

Wasil had been a local celebrity of sorts. Photographs widely circulated on social media show him holding an automatic weapon and wearing a uniform and helmet.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is hoping to arrange a meeting with an Afghan boy who shot to fame after pictures of him dressed in a striped plastic bag jersey went viral, Kabul's football federation said on Monday.

Five-year-old Murtaza Ahmadi idolises the Argentina forward but a jersey of his favourite player is beyond the means of his poor family in the volatile province of Ghazni near Kabul.

His older brother Homayoun, 15, made him the blue-and-white-striped plastic bag with Messi's named scrawled in marker pen and posted the photos of Murtaza wearing it on Facebook in mid-January.

Jana Kinsman has a bee in her bonnet. The Chicago-based illustrator and year-round cyclist, who also happens to be Miss October 2012 in the cycling-centric TyK pinup calendar, had an epiphany about keeping beehives buzzing in the urban jungle. After apprenticing at The Blessed Bee urban apiary in Eugene, Oregon, she brainstormed the master plan for Bike•a•Bee, a distributed network of beehives in the Chicago area that Kinsman will care for by pedaling from hive to hive. Her start-up, which recently reached its funding goal of $7,000 on Kickstarter (additional donations mean more beehives), will connect local urban farms and gardens with bees, which will produce luscious honey while also helping to pollinate the plants. Find out more about Kinsman and Bike•a•Bee in this clip from the Sundance Channel:Jana Kinsman and Bike•a•Bee.
