You're welcome.

So, knowing that I have a book buying problem, when I ordered a bed from Ikea a couple of years ago, I ordered a small backup bookshelf that I could keep stashed away for the future. And lo it came to pass that earlier this year, I think, I finally assembled it. Here's what's on it right now. (Well, last night, when I took pictures.)

may I lick that Wodehouse shelf and collection

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 October 2018 17:35 (five years ago) link

I don't see why not; one of my dear friends came by the other night and unselfconsciously started smelling one of my books so I'm used to whatever.

My dad has accumulated a bunch of those Overlook Press Wodehouse books for himself, picking up used copies at attractive prices, and then he conveyed the Jeeves and Wooster subset to me for my birthday this year.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Thursday, 11 October 2018 17:37 (five years ago) link

There are the shelves as seen by the casual observers, and then the second rows of books behind those currently visible, and then the stacks of books that don't fit on the overstuffed shelves, not to mention the books which remain in boxes so that the stacks don't get too out of hand, and then the boxes in storage so that I have room to maneuver through my home. I might have to hire a professional to photograph the lot.

It's really going to be quite the bonfire once this shit ignites, I tell you waht.

please, everyone, hire me to take photographs of your bookshelves. i use an iphone SE - totally clean lens, triple-wiped with my cotton shirt. $25 per pic. $20 if you want me to do it remotely (just skype me in to your living room and i'll take a picture of my laptop screen)

For reference: It's 2008! What do your books look like?... has numerous photos of bookshelves belonging to ILBers, both past and present. My own bookshelves look much as they did ten years, when viewed in large. I have added one more standing bookshelf to those pictured. It is filled, of course. That's what bookshelves do!

Haven’t moved my books or shelves down from Edinburgh yet so you’ll get my dresser top and half the books I’ve picked up from the local charity shops in the last four months. I had been ignoring the lack of order until I took this photo.

https://www.blackgate.com/2023/05/21/in-memory-of-a-legendary-collector-denny-lien-september-26-1945-april-15-2023/

I frequently wonder what I'm going to get rid of but I hear people saying "wish I hadn't got rid of that" all the time, and there are a few things I got rid of and bought again, so I need to become far more sane before I get rid of much more.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 28 October 2023 23:07 (five months ago) link

I would like to be less sane about books but there’s nowhere to put new bookcases in this place and I rent so new books sort of get wedged in places as it is. If I ever live someplace with builtins it’s gonna get interesting

Or if I inherit my dad’s stuff god help me

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Saturday, 28 October 2023 23:10 (five months ago) link

I hear people saying "wish I hadn't got rid of that" all the time

the possibility of later regret is always present when you get rid of a book. I've learned that such regrets are mostly grounded in a kind of nostalgic sentimentality rather than because you NEED the book for some purpose. it's almost always about the pleasant feelings you associate with it. One simply likes to know it is there on your shelf. In that case, it's like keeping your favorite stuffed animals and toys from childhood. Most of the value is in the memories and feelings, for which the object is a trigger. Once I understood this it became easier to dispense with the object and just revisit the memory, which takes less storage space.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Saturday, 28 October 2023 23:24 (five months ago) link

My trouble is if I get rid of the object I am liable to lose track of the memory forever

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Saturday, 28 October 2023 23:27 (five months ago) link

I only have one bookshelf but it’s a doozy. Will post later

calstars, Saturday, 28 October 2023 23:34 (five months ago) link

I'm not very sentimental about these things, the things I regretted getting rid of and bought again were really good books that I gave away in excessive enthusiasm for reducing my collection. But I think it was good to know that I can regret things like that and I'm a bit more careful now.

delighted to see you’ve got the space your books deserve. it’ll be a handsome wall when you’re done. inclined to agree with calz on the heater. as well as curled and desiccated pages, any dust will be delightfully lifted and convected (i suppose that should be conveyed) around your domicile.

I really wish I had taken a picture of the double-sided bookcase wall dividing the upper floor of my cabin before that cabin burned down.

The shelves stretched between the cabin's support posts that ran down the middle of the room. When the shelves were empty you could see through them from one side of the room to the other, but when they were full they formed a wall so I had a guest room.

I moved out before it burned down, so I only lost a few of my books that I hadn't bothered to move yet.
