Something Queer is Going On (later redubbed The Fletcher Mysteries) is a children's mystery book series written by Elizabeth Levy and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein.

The books focus on the cases of the young amateur sleuths Jill, her best friend Gwen, and Jill's almost completely inert basset hound Fletcher. Gwen, marked by her annoying habit of tapping her dental braces, is the more aggressive of the pair, while Jill attempts to be moderate in the investigations.

Are we voting for the titles, since it doesn't seem quite popular enough for many of us to have read much of them?

I'm in the wrong age group for these, but based on your description I like the concept. Especially Fletcher, who I imagine contributes more to the dialogue than the action.

these sound wonderful, i'm surprised i never stumbled on them when i was younger. i feel like half the books i got out of the library around ages 7-8 or whatever were mystery stories for kids. i read a bunch about a girl detective named cam jansen, whose gimmick was pretty awesome:

A series of books following the exploits of a fifth grade female detective named Jennifer "Cam" Jansen and her best friend Eric. Nicknamed Cam for her photographic memory, the protagonist closes her eyes and says "click" at various points in a story, mimicking the noise of a camera while memorizing a scene in front of her. She later recalls these scenes to aid in solving a mystery.
