Especially about the North or the prairies. I've read some Pierre Berton, and you know, he's OK, but surely there's more? Or, if there isn't, what are his better books?

A Brief History of Canada by Roger E. Riendeau
Sacre Blues: An Unsentimental Journey Through Quebec by Taras Grescoe
Empire of the Bay: The Company of Adventurers That Seized a Continent by Peter Newman
Canada for Dummies (really, my Canadian S/O says it's a decent overview)
The Canadians by Andrew Malcolm

I wonder if I dare to suggest any of L.M. Montgomery's pieces? *ducking*

I just finished reading Glyn Williams' Voyages of Delusion: The Search for the Northwest Passage in the Age of Reason and that's got some good stuff about the Hudson Bay Company in it too. And a lot of maps.

I'm only somewhat disappointed this is a Casuistry thread. (only because for a second I thought someone else gave a crap about Canuckistan)
and the Canada for Dummies is actually Canadian History for Dummies and it's by Will Ferguson, so it is good, but it's really sort of a survey of his two best books Why I Hate Canadians and Bastards & Boneheads.

You should really read Solomon Gursky Was Here by Mordecai Richler. It's a novel, but it deals a lot with Canadian history.
Farley Mowat's books are good reads but factually suspect.

(Part of the idea was to lure the Canuckistani to ILB.)

From my girlfriend's bookshelf (she's in her fourth year of a history degree at Laurentian):

The Kingdom of Canada - W. L. Morton
Canada: A Portrait in Letters - Charlotte Gray
The Canadian Prairies: A History - Gerald Friesen
A History of the Canadian Peoples - J.M. Bumsted

There's quite a few more, but she gets upset when I fiddle too much with her bookshelves.

Oh, and she's completely enamoured with this historian named McKillop, who is apparently quite good.

I'm especially interested in histories of the prairies that don't ignore the last 50 years. I realize it's not as glamorous as the pioneer days but I'm still curious.

there's supposed to be a webcam or two, but I can't seem to find them. I'll keep looking though.

Huck If I Know (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The webcams were found "on another thread".
