manny farber

From what I've read, Manny Farber seems to have been the best critic ever to write on film--or if not that, at least the best prose stylist. I've been reading NEGATIVE SPACE from the library, but the problem (as when reading old Kael reviews) is that no one has seen most of these movies: even if you've seen all the requisite classics, you probably haven't seen the once over-praised flops from almost half a century ago.

Well my question is I don't know which volume to buy, since MOVIES is a repackaged edition of NEGATIVE SPACE. Any advice?

Thanks
Ken

My advice would be to name your kids Manny. It's the best name ever.

buy the reissue of negative space - it has all of the original plus a bunch of other stuff. pretty much everything he ever wrote about movies, i'd guess, including a fantastic review of taxi driver. i love how most of his reviews can be read either as negative or positive, you're never totally sure.

especially the later ones with patricia patterson -- also has an interview at the back.

seeing these movies is U+K for me.

okay, question number two: what's manny farber's FACES?

Sincerely,

what movies does he talk about that are unavailable? i remember him talking about herzog's 'thingummy', which is hard to see.

I didn't know whether he was alive or dead, or what he was up to.

Negative Space is one of my favourite essay collections, and books full stop. Looking back it got me deeper and deeper into the whole matter of going to the cinema.

RIP :-(

R Baez, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

RIP. He's one of the only film critics I've liked more after re-reading him.

Yeah, for some reason I thought he was already dead, but RIP.

Haven't read much by him but was only reading about him and looking into his books just last month. I think I was surprised to find out he was still alive when I saw his wikipedia.

I saw him at the Walter Reade Theater 2-3 years ago, postscreening discussion. He was obviously laboring to express what he wanted to say.

Well of course.
