Ha. Just did a search for Byatt after reading "The Children's Book" and (completely unconnected) Margaret Craven's "I Heard The Owl Call My Name." In the latter, you're told on the first page that the main character dies. In the former, the death count (during the First World War) is high. Recommend me something to read ...
