Mildly interested in the above. Haven't tried to listen to any of these in the past though.

'Life and Fate' is in the no1 of the best sellers this week.

I was reading about both series and novel in an old magazine round at the in-laws today. Sounds pretty incredible, I'm a bit surprised not to have heard of it before, let alone noticed any recent hype. How and why has it become a bestseller now, exactly?

Well it has sold a few copies because of this high profile serialization on R4 so plenty of ppl are picking up. Also it is about WWII so that surely has a lot of bestseller potential.
Listened to a bit of Andrew Marr on this and was bored stiff. Was hunting for an interview w/(Grossmann translator) Robert Chandler. No luck on that score.

It's not new though, is it? Aiui it's been around in English since the 80s. Surprised if an R4 serialiasation is enough to make you a bestseller.

My copy says it ws translated in '85 (only smuggled in the West in the late 70s).
Yes actually I've no idea what makes anything into a bestseller so I'll shut up :-)

Ulysses tomorrow on R4!

Am I right in thinking it's 24-hour Ulysses? Will try to catch some of it, anyway.

R4 are doing about 8 hours spread through the day.
I will certainly catch it -- wonder if it will revive my dormant interest in the novel.

If it doesn't, I'm taking you out of my will.

so
as detailed on the relevant thread, i'm currently v much enjoying the radio dramatisation of the lord of the rings
and i wondered, seeing as i dont really seem to be able to read books anymore
what people can recommend in the area of the above
audiobooks i haven't tried, but can't see the appeal tbh, so strictly dramatisations pls (unless you have something you're certain can change my mind)

I tried Love And Fate by Vasily Grossman but tbh found it impossible to follow. It's a very lengthy book, and the dramatisation was iirc only 2-3 hours, so that might have contributed. More likely it's because I haven't read it; I'm the same with audiobooks, they're far easier if you already know the story.
I do enjoy an audiobook though, they're great for a long drive; and a first-person narrative can be similar to a dramatisation I think. I've still got a few I burned kicking about I think; I could send you one if you want to try?
