Youtubes are loading as black lines... I'm on Mac/Chrome. Don't think it's my adblocker.
Just me or anybody else running into this?

Seems fine in Safari but not in Chrome.

fwiw, i was using Safari on an iPad and not a PC.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Friday, 12 August 2016 07:18 (seven years ago) link

Firefox, Windows 10 - no problems - IE and Chrome both have the monolith.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 12 August 2016 09:46 (seven years ago) link

"loading as black lines" what does this look like? Can someone post a screen? I'm seeing YT's on both my mac and ipad just fine tbh.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 12 August 2016 09:54 (seven years ago) link

not having a problem on Safari on a MacBook Pro (all fully updated to latest OS etc)

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 12 August 2016 10:15 (seven years ago) link

Kinda cool looking. In Chrome on iPad and Chrome/Firefox on Mac no problems here.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 12 August 2016 10:25 (seven years ago) link

Ok, I just tried this. If I switch to Mobile Device Interface on my desktop, I can see the embeds. If I'm going through the regular interface on my desktop, man alive's link gets changed from

www.youtube.com/v/mbpkuLJPy9c&fs=1&hl=en
to
youtube.googleapis.com/v/mbpkuLJPy9c&fs=1&hl=en

how's life, Friday, 12 August 2016 11:20 (seven years ago) link

...which opens the link up in a new page for me, but nothing plays.

how's life, Friday, 12 August 2016 11:20 (seven years ago) link

this is happening on other sites. not an ilx issue

r|t|c, Friday, 12 August 2016 11:21 (seven years ago) link

Interesting. I've passed this thread along to stet, anyway.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 12 August 2016 13:23 (seven years ago) link

Basically the embeds need to be fixed to use the HTML5 version of vids.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 12 August 2016 13:24 (seven years ago) link

Ok, so here's the thread. I'm using Safari on 10.11.6, and it's still black rectangles for me.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 August 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link

trying it from vimeo, random choice of vid

dow, Friday, 12 August 2016 15:56 (seven years ago) link

Oho! Better than a vertical monad. Now, with the "s" removed:
http://vimeo.com/178395776

dow, Friday, 12 August 2016 15:58 (seven years ago) link

Still, I'll settle for a link. Now, if vimeo could just add LP tracks from 1968 Gosdin Brothers country-folk-rock The Sounds of Goodbye, feat. Clarence White (in other words, is it mainly/all something about pasting YouTube content, which plays fine on Tube itself---maybe it doesn't want us pasting from it no more?)

dow, Friday, 12 August 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

But it doesn't mind us (or me) pasting into emails

dow, Friday, 12 August 2016 16:19 (seven years ago) link

Nor into Blogger---I'm talking about the basic links, like I just posted above from Vimeo, not the embedded freezeframes, where you just click on the right triangles to play.

dow, Friday, 12 August 2016 16:29 (seven years ago) link

(Although the visible frame did just now appear in gmail test)

dow, Friday, 12 August 2016 16:30 (seven years ago) link

Seems to be working now via my *new* Firefox, with its YouTube High Definition add-on (also its YouTube Flash add-on, I think)---still in Windows 7:

I still see a black monolith bar.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 August 2016 03:56 (seven years ago) link

In case one of the developers missed this post:

Basically the embeds need to be fixed to use the HTML5 version of vids.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 13 August 2016 12:12 (seven years ago) link

Right, I'll take a look at this now.

Is this something we can safely change retrospectively to all the old posts, does anyone know?

stet, Saturday, 13 August 2016 13:06 (seven years ago) link

Weird, everything looks fine on Chrome on my Android phone, but get the monolith on both Chrome and Safari on my Macbook Pro.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 August 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link

It's going to be quite the database update, but if you don't change the old posts, every single video ever posted will be unwatchable in Chromium-based browsers from now on.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 13 August 2016 16:54 (seven years ago) link

That's cool, threads'll load quicker.

I'm all for large scale indiscriminate destruction.. But I do want to see what just got posted on the Cage 4'33 thread

brimstead, Saturday, 13 August 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

Could this be solved with a CSS script?

This Firefox plugin turns the boxes into youtube picture links: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-embed2link/developers

Einstein, Kazanga, Sitar (abanana), Monday, 15 August 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

Stet, can you at least update the embed code for new videos? You can worry about the old Flash embeds later.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 17 August 2016 06:40 (seven years ago) link

yup, thought it was some weird new minimalist meme

I only just realised that this is not the case.

stet, Thursday, 18 August 2016 18:05 (seven years ago) link

Looks like Google have made the old embeds work again. Indolence wins once more. (I'll update to the new method anyway)

stet, Thursday, 18 August 2016 18:07 (seven years ago) link

just take the compliments, bro

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 18 August 2016 18:32 (seven years ago) link

xp on the other hand, indolence does need more good p.r.

bagging area (map), Thursday, 18 August 2016 18:43 (seven years ago) link

Not really a problem, but FYI ... in Chrome, the restored embeds now show a line of text where controls would normally appear that reads "The YouTube Flash API was officially deprecated on January 27th, 2015" with a link to https://developers.google.com/youtube/flash_api_reference.

Brad C., Wednesday, 24 August 2016 01:00 (seven years ago) link

This should be fixed for new embeds from now on. Will look at historical ones ... later
