Images downloading when not displayed?

I have images turned off in prefs, and I am logged in properly. When I open an image-heavy thread, the images correctly don't appear, but still the thread takes a long time to open, and the status bar of my browser says stuff like "Waiting for farm1.static.flickr.com." Are the images all downloading anyway and then hiding behind CSS? Is that the best way to do it?

Don't worry, they're working on banning images.

I've noticed this too - if you view the source of the page, the img src code is still there. In old ILX, the img src tags were converted to a href if you had images turned off.

Yeah this I did wonder about. If the idea of images off is to reduce the end users's bandwidth usage and/or avoid things like a corporate firewall showing random sudden requests from 60bajillion flicker and photobucket accounts, theres no point not showing the images if that still happens.

The only benefit that still works is avoiding unexpected pr0n and the like. But I've given up and turned images on for now, as it is just too hard to toggle it on and off easily :(
