Correct Typography

For when it mentions people's names at the end of their post like

-- Dante-Cubed(pianoma...) etc

Could you change that so instead of using two hyphens (--) there will be a correct em dash instead? Like:

— Dante-Cubed([email protected]) etc

The HTML code for an em dash (#8212;) is —
This will make typography zealots like myself very happy.

No.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What's wrong with the two hyphens? It's not that bad. But why doesn't it make a dash?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a typography zealot and i think this is pointless. It was what was used on Greenspan's LUSENET and was neatly brought over at the TIME OF THE GREAT MIGRATION. Greenspan probably did it cos that was the old e-mail convention for the start of a sig (tho it was on a line by itself followed by the sig)

not all computers translate em & en dashes properly. typography zealots such as myself can handle hyphens under the circumstances.

since where is there a "correct" typography for msg bds?

Still, it's nice to have something genuinely important for us mods to think about, rather than all this nonsense about spamming the boards and posting hideous pornographic images and banning people.

-- is not a dash because there is a hair space. Aja is too young to understand.
Compare:
-- Dante
— Dante

Correct Typography makes reading text easier. ALL browsers translate character entities correctly (except for the zero-width space and the hair space, which will only work on IE if you use Arial Unicode MS font).

Dante-Cubed (Sean3), Saturday, 24 April 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The -- convention is a signifier from Usenet, many email and news reader programs even now recognise two dashes and a space as an indicator of a sigfile, and thus strip it out when someone replies to that message (try it in OE or Eudora or FreeAgent and see). It has nothing to do with em dashes at all, Dante.

Of course replies on here dont automatically quote preceeding text so its a bit of a throwback, but changing it to an em seems a bit pointless to me.

Finally, what Martin said. You dont look big and clever by showing off yr typography knowledge here.

What the hell?

I'm only one year, one month, and ten days younger than you! I'm sorry I'm not as much as a computer geek as you. I do know the most about computers in my class though. Some of thos people can't even copy and past a picture! Idiots!!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 24 April 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear Dante,

STFU.

Thanks.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 24 April 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, my cousin went to St. Francis University!
(sorry)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hrm. I don't know what STFU stands for, but I sure hope it's another way to tell Dante that he's a creepy asshat and that nobody thinks he's particularly smart just because he knows what a damned em dash is.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Shut The Fuck Up

(that's what it stands for, I'm not saying stfu to you!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks. I feel kinda silly for not having figured that one out on my own.

So I guess it was another way to tell Dante that he's a creepy asshat, etc.

Good.
