Is there one, am I blind? Seems we spend an unreasonable amount of time fixating on the passing of others...

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a Culture: Celebrities, I would think that's where they go. ILE's categories are pretty fucked if you ask me.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That's where I put it. But don't we all think a deaths category would be most useful?

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be if people used the category system to look up threads. I don't know that they don't, but there are so many uncategorized threads that I don't think people find it useful, and so the preferred method is to search. I personally think we should junk the category system.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

better yet

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, either junk it or do a super-crazy overhaul, Library of Congress-stylee. I don't even know what half the categories on ILM even mean.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i invented the categories on ILM!! if you understand them you have an interior map of my brane!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the mods should just let a ton of normal users categorize?

BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I would totally be for that if the categories made any sense and/or you could convince me that people use the categories to any real extent.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they'd make more sense if each thread showed the category near the top.

I have used them for searching before....

BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I use the categories maybe 5% of the time I search.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Categories. I use them religiously. I think a few more could be added, but the systemic side of my brain intrinsicly thinks they are a Good Thing.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Categories?

(not entirely serious)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 31 March 2005 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they'd make more sense if each thread showed the category near the top

THERE IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING TO THIS

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(Also, note to self, the board bookmarks don't work in category listings)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

a bucket for everything and everything in it's bucket.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I just added a category "Deaths, R.I.P. etc".

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't done any work on the thread categorisation saltmine for a while, I'll go and bung a few 100 threads into folders right now. The difficulty of couse is there are so many threads where it's difficult to fit them in w/anything.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I love categorising. Do you have to be a moderator to do it?

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a seperate permission so knock yourself out.
The link should be on the New QUESTIONS page.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's just me and Nicole who have categorisation only privs. Ask Andrew?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The trouble is that I would guess 80% of new threads are uncategorized by their users, it's really hard to keep up. This former librarian loves categories for sure, but I really think we need a new system. I would volunteer to do this (I'm unemployed in five days!) but I'm concerned about people not thinking MY categories make sense. I'll give it a shot with the blessing of the lizards though!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, thank you Noodles!

This is like the most fun game, ever, trying to categorise threads. I've done a couple already - easy ones, natch. Whenever I have a spare moment, I'll do a few more.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. My. God. You do realise you have completely destroyed my ability to ever do another day's work again, ever? This is just too much fun.

Must... stop... must... work...

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

People who can on ILE:
SeanC, Matt DC, teeny, blueski, Mr Noodles, Andrew Thames, pashmina, tracerhand, Nicole, kate, thatgirl, Jody Beth Rosen, jel, mark p, dubplatestyle, nickdastoor, Felicity, Gareth, Ned and D_to_the_G.
Tom, Alan, enneff and Mark s as well.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have immediately seen the need for a couple more categories. Something along the lines of Childhood or Nostalgia would be appropriate (not sure if toys threads should go in objects, because they are more nostalgia oriented).

Also, we need a "weather" category. This being an English board and all. ;-)

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

AND IS THERE NOT ACTUALLY A "FAP" CATEGORY?!?!?

Oh my god, please rectify this omission immediately!

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

'Dates, Relationships, etc' or 'Drinking' for FAPs?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it could also be "ILX Posters" for ones in honour of a person or "Places" for one in honour of a place. I think it's better to have a general "Fancy A..." category so it's easy to find them all in one place. (Especially for those of us who haven't bookmarked the calendar.)

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

'Meta:IL* Events'?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah! Good one. Shall do.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the "About The Weather" category new?

I've started putting all Acts Of God - floods, tsunamis, northern lights, etc. - in the Weather category because it seems to make sense.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Acts of god in there are good, cause I can't do a thing about the weather.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

For my Information Management MA dissertation I shall recategorise everything in ILX.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ILE's categories are pretty fucked if you ask me.

Yeah, there are lots of problems with it which is why I gave up on it a long time ago. I just don't have the time and effort it would take to get things into shape.

I am surprised I still have priviledges, I thought they weren't working anymore.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate have you ever considered just jacking the exciting new job in and becoming a librarian?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

A FAP category? What a great idea!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

All the time, Matt, all the time. But an art degree gets your further in advertising than it does in Library Science.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, who wants that under the thread title, in little lettering, we show the category of the thread (which is a link to the category list, obv)

Also, and this sounds "fun", if the thread is UNcategorised and you have Categorising Admin privs, then you get a menu to categorise it there ON THE SPOT.

Though maybe that shouldn't kick in until a few posts down the line??

that's the bunny

wrt the "whitespace". the html on ILX has always stayed pretty basic (HTML 3 i spose)*, and I'd just use H6 and let the browser sort out the appearance.

(*i recently and relucatantly broke this general rule to get over a safari-ism, but it's a minor infraction)
