Ok, this may be too processor intensive or something for it to be practical.

but do you think it's an idea that, when people "ask a question", the server will automatically do a fuzzy (or whatever) search for threads that have a similar title and then ask them if they really want to ask this new question?

maybe this will reduce the duplicate questions being asked all the time.

I don't know if anyone is working on stuff like this, now that Alan has gone.

maybe people should have to type out a tedious paragraph to prove their worthiness to start threads?

I have a little search box on the top of my page. I wish it defaulted to searching "this board" rather than "google", though.

Where did Alan go?

I've never seen the problem with duplicate threads really, I mean people have the same conversations every day.

He got fed up with this place...which seems fair enough.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Friday, 20 May 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that's a damn shame.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 20 May 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be nice if search was on the top of the page. I'll lock or delete a new thread if it's a dupe AND the 'original' thread was on New Answers recently (where recently = I remember it, not exactly foolproof). And that action is certainly not meant to rebuke anyone or make them feel foolish, merely to point them to information that they presumably were looking for. I think searching for and reviving threads is good, and we should encourage this habit, but it's not something I'm going to get bent out of shape about either.

That said, if I had the skillz and some spare time, Ken's idea might be a fun project to play around with! But ultimately it's way down on the list of priorities.

My home ISP was having issues this past week, I'll see if I can sneak in this long weekend around the FA Cup.
