well, not as aggressively as what my mayne said, but yeah serious serious overkill. also hard to find a 'suitable' thread to discuss this stuff on when they're locked immediately.

let's move this to the Joanna thread but instead of posting words, let's post fairy pictures

Mr. Que, Friday, 5 March 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I am going to spell this out for you since you are not understanding what happened here.

I posted something controversial today. It spawned a couple of other controversial threads. Multiple people registered strong objections to them. I fumed, thought about it, agreed with them, and locked the threads.

You, then, revived a thread where the exact same fight happened only under nastier terms, with the exact same type of "lol sexism" culminating in an all-out racism-vs-sexism-which-deserves-more-attention fight that was not at all pleasant, to say "I approve!" and completely glossed over the actual hurt feelings expressed on the tread to wave an "I'm a feminist, ladies!" flag.

Stop being a fucking dumbass.

Dan I know you were called out on starting a thread that offended three people and that must be awkward as a sitewide mod but it really didn't call for multiple thread deletions/locking and the flathammer treatment of LJ.

this is in reference to the thread about the ass where i was accused of wanting to set up a thought police

max, Friday, 5 March 2010 17:26 (fourteen years ago) link

iirc the racism-vs-sexism constituted about 5% at most of that thread, and about 90% was quite a mature discussion about sexism. if i identify as a feminist it is not to get chicks on ilx, it is to try and get others to see it my way and establish the need for further attitude-change

and i revived it because we don't have a rolling gender issues thread, so that i could thank you for a good moderating decision relating to the issue

and now you go all whoopee on my ass

I spent four bloody years there (acoleuthic), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Is there any validity to the idea that leaving it up and locked, seeing as how the thread included both the orig offensive material and posts that demonstrate reservations/dispproval abt the material, helps define the standards of the uh "posting community" here?

Deleting it, while it does remove the immediate issue, also makes it look like we never had that exchange here.

It wasn't deleted, it was dropped from new answers.

Mr. Que, Friday, 5 March 2010 17:28 (fourteen years ago) link

i regard it as an important thread with some valuable exchanges and setting of standards but i guess as long as it's not deleted i'll live

I spent four bloody years there (acoleuthic), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Okay, no prob. I only use SNA so was unaware you could drop things from it before they fell off the page organically. FYI I am referring to the bitch thread, not the ass one.

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:37 (fourteen years ago) link

i regard it as an important thread with some valuable exchanges and setting of standards

This is the massive problem I have with that viewpoint. It is a massive fight for most of it with people getting very upset over the contents of the thread. Using it as a rolling "I am posting my feminist stuff here" thread strikes me as being both massively self-centered and grossly unempathetic; it wasn't even as if the situation being complained about in that thread was the same or even similar to the thread that got locked.

I knew people were going to focus on the lolsy aspect of that list because I also thought it was pretty funny. I t was also pretty damned disturbing and troubling and what I hoped was that the lols would get out of the way and people could pick at the unpleasant things that it says about our society as well; what I didn't really factor in was how offensive it would be to Laurel and Kate, both of whom I know are very sensitive about these thing, both of whom have reacted negatively to things like this in the past and neither of whom I intended to offend with that thread. Dragging that growing ill will over to another thread where I screamed at Laurel for repeatedly using the word "nigger" strikes me as being willfully obtuse at best.

no, you're right. i'm sorry i did that, it was a kinda hair-trigger that didn't take into account the implications of some of that thread's dialogue

but the 'kinds of bitch' thread...well, it'd have been better off posted to one of those 'what the fuck is wrong with people' threads...polling it was ridiculous imo and the straw that broke the camel's back

and yeah it was a bit self-centred of me...i'd stayed silent for the 'kinds of bitch' threads and felt my voice needed to be heard after the fact, whereas it didn't. i'll know for next time...it's not like i'm an authority, just a dude with occasionally overenthusiastic opinions

I spent four bloody years there (acoleuthic), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Re this morning's little fun time, I didn't want Kate to be alone taking heat for a viewpoint that I share, so I just dropped in 2nd that emotion.

I was willing to let the thread go wherever it was gonna go, though. And I think it was trending toward enough people showing some complex thought that it could have been interesting.

IMO the thing that killed it was people who wanted pure unconflicted lols and objected to any additional discussion, even if it was more deft than I could ever be.

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Side thing which is gonna do no good, but I'm gonna say it anyway:

Why this idea that calling out "sexism" and calling out "racism" are in some way posing the -isms as somehow oppositional or suggesting a "vs" type attitude?

I can only ever speak for myself, but when I make comparisons it is certainly *not* on a "which is a bigger problem? let us compare and contrast" level, but trying to get across the point that BOTH are bad and both are things which should be cautioned against and thought about with a certain level of sensitivity. It's never a taking sides issue, it's an "and both" issue, especially considering the frequency with which cretins who strongly believe in the one often believe in the other.

The moment it becomes a "my -ism is worse than your -ism" then you cheapen both. Posing it as "sexism vs racism" is to willfuly misunderstand what people are trying to say.

Louis, if you want to go and make a "male feminists" thread then by all means do. I thought we had already had one, as I definitely remember these issues being addressed back in about 2001 or so but a quick search reveals that we apparently haven't, and I can't remember which thread they were addressed on.

There's Always Been A Dance Element To (Masonic Boom), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:48 (fourteen years ago) link

perhaps i shall, but not today. your first point is pretty otm; whatever misunderstandings there were on the ass thread weren't due iirc to a battle of isms, just crossed semantic wires, and the two have to be challenged equally

call all destroyer, Friday, 5 March 2010 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

fair enough. genuinely confused about where that leaves us, but not hugely invested as much as kinda irked that a lol thread was locked fairly gratuituously. That's not trying to be a dick to either Laurel or Kate but, y'know, there's a lot of stuff posted out there just about every day that lots of people are gonna feel strongly about.

but not in a 'this is worth a clusterfuck' kind of way.

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Friday, 5 March 2010 18:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Just to be fair (and as one of the people that started parallel threads, mine intended to point out the ridiculous aspect of being linguistically obsessed by things like this, also to get a cheap laugh and make fun of crazy dog breeders), i dont think these threads should have been dropped or locked, but i am not going to make a big stink about it.

my solution doesn't really make sense but see I can't just delete it now like you dudes could. More on point, if a dispute involves a mod they should probably allow another mod to take action regarding it.

Hervé Grillechaise (WmC), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I think he's talking in part about the tendency of mods to edit their own typos

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:26 (fourteen years ago) link

which I agree is kind of annoying, if you notice it, since not everyone can do it and most ppl aren't going to ask a mod to fix typos for them

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:26 (fourteen years ago) link

there's some consistency merit to having mods post requests for mod action on things they were going to do but it seems like introducing a middle man for propriety's sake (also the fact that mods do often bounce things off of each other in private before taking action is difficult for non-mods to take into account, since it happens in private)

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's what I meant. While the spell-check annoys the shit out of me... I really mean for actual disputes/fites.

i'm #FFFFFF btw (bnw), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

that's not a bad idea, maybe? i think if a thread starter had gone to you with this request, you prob mightn't have taken it as seriously as you did when the actual complaint was against yourself dan?

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:42 (fourteen years ago) link

That is possible, but I am trying to remember if there is a recent example where someone complained that a specific thread was offensive/hurtful and I argued that it should remain open as opposed to locking/deleting it; let me search and see (having trouble because this type of thing rarely come up; people have asked for posters to be banned and sometimes they have, sometimes they haven't).

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:44 (fourteen years ago) link

remove my last few posts from this thread?

There is this thread, where the poster wanted something they were embarrassed about removed, but the other people on the thread really enjoyed the contribution and felt he had nothing to be embarrassed about, so the litmus test that fails there is that no one seems to have taken offense to the posts in question.

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Can We Please Ban This Asshole?

This was a request for someone to be banned where the posts in question were undoubtedly abrasive/offensive, but counter-indicative of the posting style of the person who wrote them. It was suggested that the suggest ban button be used and, if further concerns needed to be addressed that the mod was missing, to communicate via email.

I don't really see anything else in the past two months that isn't "can you delete/change this for me"/"can you ban me from posting". I agree with the (non-)action taken in both cases, particularly wrt to the request for follow-up conversation in case 2 if that wasn't a satisfactory answer.

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Friday, 5 March 2010 19:57 (fourteen years ago) link

btw for the record, I didn't ban the unhelpful sockpuppet or delete its post but it is pretty much a given that pulling that type of stunt on these threads is going to get you banned so I don't know why people continue to do it
