Is anyone else getting this gibberish?

TEH ONE AN ONLEY DEANN GULBAREY (deangulberry), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be interested to know why the server is flaky and if there's anything we can do to help.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure whether it's a software or hardware thing. Mysql has been crashing every couple of weeks, and I can't figure out why.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
bump

it seems to have been AWFUL today, but i don't know what's made the difference. there are a lot of searches in the logs, and hitting the search function hard will back up even the main server eventually. but i just don't know.

just so you know i've noticed

:-(

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

threads keep stacking up waiting on the sql query

SELECT offset, start FROM daylight WHERE code='UTC' AND ADDDATE('700101',INTERVAL UNIX_TIMESTAMP() SECOND)>=start AND ADDDATE('700101',INTERVAL UNIX_TIMESTAMP() SECOND)<end

which it really shouldn't. i tested the daylight table and it's fine, and that query is also now CACHEd (per thread) too

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

i knew it would be bad today, with the change in time zone, but i didn't think it would be this bad. what the flamin eck is wrong with the flippin daylight table :-( x 1000

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

forgive my stupidity, but is this why all new posts are appearing as being made "yesterday"?

if i turn off the use-relative-date setting, they appear as october 31. as soon as i turn relative-date back on: it's yesterday once more.

which is quite cool. almost.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

that's something i hadn't even spotted :-( prob to do with the time zone change yes. but only that connects it to the poor performance today

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

oh it might be the difference between the PHP/unix time and the mysql time...

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah that was it. i'll try a proper fix some time

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

no worries, alan! it's no big deal. and nobody else has even noticed yet :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIME ZONES THERE ARE IN THE SOVIET UNION

ELEVEN, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

> SELECT offset, start FROM daylight WHERE code='UTC' AND ADDDATE('700101',INTERVAL UNIX_TIMESTAMP() SECOND)>=start AND ADDDATE('700101',INTERVAL UNIX_TIMESTAMP() SECOND)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering why I never seem to be on at the same time as Alex in Novosibirsk.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

curses, last post got truncated at the less than

how expensive is the ADDDATE stuff? wouldn't it be more efficient if it calculated the ADDDATE thing once, assigned it to a variable and then used the variable in the comparison?

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

it has been doing something like that for a while now - i'm going to add even more caching soon. but i'm still a bit concerned that this table is snarling things up mroe than it used to and i don't really know why. i've done a check/repair on it.

actually note to self, i think some zones don't have a DST defined for next year.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

ELEVEN?

It's not even funny.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 4 November 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

OK, i deserve an absolutely massive slap.

the recent slowing down is ENTIRELY my arsing fault. i have put in a proper fix (though not in the CVS yet, sorry, only way to do it from work) and there should be an immediate improvement.

still going to get them at peak times tho i guess

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 7 November 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Er, like just now, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 November 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

they've been on and off all day, but the server load IS better now :-(

i could put more effort into caching offsets. it occurs to me that if the date yr about to look up isn't NOW then it could cache THAT result with upper and lower cutoffs cos the chances are that the next date looked up will be within them and you can reuse, and so on. this should cut down even more on mysql requests.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 7 November 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

should be good. eek...

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 7 November 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

but it seems that thread locking/permission additions are still fucking it up royally, if that massive outage is anything to go on (20 mins to add one row b y INSERT low_priority????!)

(jus talkin to myself...)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 7 November 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

BUT NOT ALWAYS. how maddening. it must be some odd combo that locks it up like that.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

It's been a pretty common combo today...

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm always too scared to do searches in case I kill ilx :/

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Jdubz (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's what i was meaning re permission additions

stop moving. (cis), Saturday, 22 July 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, last night, for the first time.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 22 July 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Likewise, along with several threads failing to load -- I didn't make a note of the error message on that, though. (It wasn't poxyfulious.)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 22 July 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

There we go, it just did it: "unread point get failed."

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 22 July 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

Does anybody know the status of Andrew rewriting ILX? Was that just a whim that passed like a gas bubble?
