Getting in touch with Moderators

Can we have a gmail account for mod requests? I suggest this because

- some people want their requests kept confidential.
- googlers wanting something moderated don't know the system.

And yes, there is a situation I've dealt with today involving a combination of these. If you're on the moderators email list you might have seen it.

I don't think we should publicise the gmail, just put it in the FAQ with a note saying it gets checked weekly and if you want something to happen quickly you're better off using the board.

Failing this we should at least say who the main moderator for each board is.

I'm also going to change some stuff in the FAQ, mostly the out of date bits about me.

Is it possible to have a multi-user gmail account?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

How about planting a form somewhere like the one I am using to type this out in which sends this message to the account, making it easier for people to mail mods in the process (as long as the link to Contact is placed at the top of the page and not the bottom like 'Problem?' which probably stills links to the old Mod Request THREAD anyway!).

Is it possible to have a multi-user gmail account?

Yes, everyone logs in with the same username and password and it's no problem.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

The form idea is fine but it does involve coding work, unlike the gmail account.

A multi user gmail account is easy - you just sent the password and login details to the people who need it.

Meanwhile my updating the board FAQ plan is revealed to be a fools dream as despite being a "Site Administrator" I don't have privileges - can someone maybe fix this sometime?

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

we could make up a user that has that e-mail account as their e-mail address, and then you could webmail them using the link like this:

http://ilx.wh3rd.net/webmail.php?username=generalilxmodaccount

HOWEVER e-mail accounts with multiple users can be problematic if the number of "authorised" users isn't kept under control.

i will set one up...

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

hello, this is your new all ilx moderator account!

ilx gmail account (ilx_moderators_by_gmail), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

http://ilx.wh3rd.net/webmail.php?username=ilx_moderators_by_gmail

i will change the code to add this link to the new answers page of this forum, which is where the "Problem?" link at the bottom of most pages takes you.

ilx gmail account (ilx_moderators_by_gmail), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

the new questions page i mean.

Moderator Request Forum | New Answers | Unanswered Questions | Ask A Question | E-mail Mods

ilx gmail account (ilx_moderators_by_gmail), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Slap it on new answers too!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

This doesn't mean that we are replacing this board, are we? It's just an alternate means of getting in touch with mods?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it's for people who don't want to post their request here for whatever reason. I do like having most of the moderation done in public but there are occasions when it's less appropriate.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I thought gmail didn't handle multiple users (see [email protected])

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

nah, we would all just know the usr/pass. Perhaps we could divide it up and I would check it on monday, stevem on tues, etc? That might be taking it too far, who knows.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

stealzor was shut down because of the amount of people logging in at the same time combined with the frequency of mp3s posted, presumably.

I share a gmail account with a few other people with mp3s and other files posted from time to time and it's no problem.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

i have passed on details of that gmail account to a couple of principal admins - could they pass on.

one alternative that i like the idea of is to remove that new special link at the top of the modreq forum and change the "Problem?" link (foot of page) to goto the http://ilx.wh3rd.net/userinfo.php?username=ilx_moderators_by_gmail page and the "about the user" text could explain what to do next, i.e. with a link to the "mod req" forum, or "click the webmail link (above) for a private off-board request - warning, the account is only checked a few times a week"

sort of thing.

what do you think?

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 25 August 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

(i REALLY like this idea BTW)
