- revise the FAQ.
- put a message on the registration page linking to a thread here for people whose emails don't arrive.

Probably some other stuff too.

Charts, graphs and a swingometer are urgent and key.

(If we can have Boris Johnson doing commentary, too, this would be even better, natch.)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I know there's a user or two (thinking specifically of juliaaa) who is having issues remaining logged-in--she's just been posting logged-out for the last few months but I would hate to lose her over a little glitch!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Also people with ( ) @ ' in their username--those should really be changed and some bit of code implemented to prevent people using those characters when registering. Especially '.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

this is actually very helpful, thank you.

teeny, what to @ and brackets do? i know about the ' problem

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

some text where it says "may be posted to by registered useres only" should also say "by the way, why haven't you registered, it's easy!" and have an appropriate link.

coder solution to all noize-board problem.

i suggest that a change be hacked up to put the noize board posts in a different sql db so that the table locks don't clash. only
disadvantage -- thread moves either lost or made more difficult. if a hackaround can be made for thread moves, then we can put ilm and
ile on difft dbs too. this could be v.v.v.v. handy for the server!

this was posted on the other thread:

So if you're unable to use your email account for some reason, you won't be able to complete the registration process

and i was going to reply, don't be silly, just use mailnator.

and then i thought, woah, hang on: what's to stop some slightly persistent troll signing up with lots of mailinator addresses?

so maybe we should, er, disallow anyone registering with a mailinator address?

i dunno. i'm way out of my depth here :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Persistent trolls will get through, yep.

But they won't be any *harder* to deal with

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Can "Logged-out" (or similar) be available as some kind of screen name for ppl who want to post/start threads as him/her despite their being actually really logged in? (ie mods will know who tis but no one else will)?

this may be too silly/complicated buty i wd be sad if Logged-Out's adventures came under sanction, however temporarily

mark s (mark s), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

@ and () in a username disable the little feature where people's email addresses appear truncated to logged-out viewers/spambots. A much smaller thing than ' but worth mentioning.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

i didn't know that, ta

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Did we forget an esctodb?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

v/v the proposal to make reg-only-locking an option at post time -- i'm worried about the performance hit since for whatever reason any form of locking has almost always resulted in a temporary poxyfule.

maybe the code could be looked at to fix whatever table locking issue causes this?

this would be a good thing anyway.

To validate this experiment, some metrics should be defined and collected during the trial period and the post-trial. You really want some objective data to point at rather than just saying "it felt funny" or "it's nicer now". I'd suggest:
  • daily number of posts

  • daily number of spam posts

  • daily number of anon/logged out posts (in post-trial period obv.)

  • daily number of "logged out" posts during trial period, if a logged out user is created

  • daily number of relevant complaint posts on mod request board
  • I don't know what would be involved to gather this data, but if it has to be done by hand, I volunteer to do as much of it as I can.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Someone should have the Logged-Out user, and people could anonymously webmail their comments to Logged-Out who could then post them. This might help keep anon threads/posts down to a minimum.

Did we forget an esctodb? OH YES. quite a few.

i still don't understand why adding per thread permissions locks things up. it SO shouldn't :-(

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

martin s reminded me last night that he had volunteered to cast an "informed outsider" eye over the code to see if he could spot anyway large-scale design faux pas --- i strongly suggest he is encouraged to do this sooner rather than later

    mark s (mark s), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

i mailed martin a while back and (i may have misread it) he wasn't very enthusiastic. i will ask again, this time with some actual code up front

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 26 August 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

he seemed enthusiastic last night so go for it

    mark s (mark s), Friday, 26 August 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

One problem I have with logging in is that several crappy mobile browsers I am forced to use don't like ILX's cookie implementation.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Friday, 26 August 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

hey, i know, stop using ilx

hahah sez the guy who most people on ilx don't know his name! no worries, just think it's funny.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

    *hi five*

jpencil, Friday, 26 August 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

what i ilx's cookie implementation anyway and why wouldn't they like it!?

    lynx likes it just fine.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 27 August 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

I've had problems getting LWP to like ilx's cookies and my mobile browser, but maybe I'm stupid.

Alan, please be nice! You have always played nice with me :(((
