WHAT?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

It's up on Newsarama now, too. What a loss.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Damn. RIP, Seth.

See also http://www.floweringnose.com/ (there's no news there, but it's Fisher's site with lots of gorgeous, wondrous art)

Yeah, definitely - the Shockwave game on there is fun to play w/, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow. Umm. RIP Seth.

Everyone buying the final part of Big In Japan this week would be a nice tribute, I guess.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Or buying the entire thing! Tho the proliferation of ads in #1 is annoying as hell - it's probably better to wait for the trade (which is coming out in March or April, I think). It's amazing stuff. As was his work in Legends of the Dark Knight. And, I assume, his Flash & GL one-shots.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Totally taken by surprise by this. Apparently there aren't any other details. Just hate getting news like this.

And if you can find it, go grab his Vertigo Pop: Tokyo series from the bargain bins (don't think it ever got the trade treatment.) It's an overlooked jem.

Other than that, just "ah, hell."

So sad : (

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 2 February 2006 16:31 (eighteen years ago) link

jeez! i've never seen this guy's stuff before but it sure looks gorgeous. sad.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:14 (eighteen years ago) link

fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!.

and I thought that he was on the way to becoming the next Allred...this is so fucking sad.

[NOT SO CONTROVERSIAL EDIT]

Amadeo, just so you know, I whacked that last line in your post because it seemed a little tasteless (in a bad pointless way, not in the usual roffletastic pointless ILC way), and I think it's better to just keep this thread from possibly going in that direction.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 February 2006 18:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Dude! I just bought the fourth of his Iron Man/Fantastic Four things today. Oh well, reading it will have added poignancy.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 2 February 2006 20:12 (eighteen years ago) link

It's okay, Daver...I probably went too far. Sorry for that, I'm feeling a little embarassed, I don't want this thread going in that direction either.

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Thursday, 2 February 2006 21:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't worry about it - I was actually thinking similar thoughts for a brief moment!

OK... I don't want to get all speak ill of the dead, but i thought that trailed off a bit after the first episode, as is generally the way with four issue mini-series. I also found problematic the way it had the main (adult) character getting a nice bit of schoolgirl young for himself. But nice art though.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:25 (eighteen years ago) link

This is awful. He was so amazingly talented, I figured he would have a very bright future.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:46 (eighteen years ago) link

RIP. :(

I loved his art in Legends of the Dark Knight: "Snow".

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I never said it was an overlooked jem because of the writing, DV. The writing was okay, but the art more than made up for it.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 3 February 2006 03:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I think that's the saddest thing about Seth dying so young - all of his art was brilliant, but he never seemed to get paired with a writer who was quite up to his level. If only, you know?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 3 February 2006 04:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, maybe not the saddest thing, but in terms of comics, it is.

fair point, although the FF/iron man in Japan one did seem to be set up to give him free reign to draw whatever he liked, which was nice.

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 4 February 2006 13:35 (eighteen years ago) link

That is nice, but letting him run wild is kinda different from him drawing a top-shelf story.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 4 February 2006 17:05 (eighteen years ago) link

That goes for almost everyone!

Right after I learned of his death, I sent condolences through the "comments" section of his website, and I got the following message back yesterday .

Thank you for your kind thoughts.  Seth died suddenly from an accidental
fall from a tall building on January 30th..  It is our hope that Seth's
energy and zanniness will live on through his friends and family.  He is
survived by his 20 month old son Toufuu, his wife Hisako, his father and
mother and five brothers and sisters.  Hisako's address is displayed
below if you would like to send rememberances or gifts of support.
Sincerely,
Seth's Family

He was a beatnik. I was a martian. (Huk-L), Monday, 6 February 2006 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link
