That's me, on page 3, losing my religion. Anyway, not to needlessly spill scorn I normally save for N'rama, but whatthefuckyoufuckingmorons?
Is this representative of something? Do NASCAR fans try to start uni courses on taking fast cars seriously?

i think a lot of bad guys would do well to take superheroes seriously before they set their plans in motion.

to be fair, 831 of those were in the two weeks before Rebirth #1.

A likely excuse!

When I was a frosh @ UConn back in 1993 (OLD), my Intro to English prof included V For Vendetta in the curriculum. Of course, before I got a chance to sink my teeth into it, I withdrew due to lax attendance habits. (9:30 AM + on the other side of campus = F!) I believe the teacher gave some talk on Superman @ some education conference a few years after that.

Which is to say perhaps it'd be better if the dood wasn't hung up on spandex.

Some humans will always take X seriously, for basically any value of X. so "Should" is a bit useless, "How" is probably better.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:22 (twenty years ago)

I think should is a good question, given that if X is quite a small industry/hobby/thing then people who take it seriously (or not seriously) and gain influence in it can substantially alter it.

Well, yeah, obviously "How can we get Alex Ross to take up LARPG instead?" is an important question, but I don't think the thread was that so much as "What happens if Noam Chomsky picks up Essential X-Men?".

I think most of the effect here is outwards, comics is quite insular (maybe not insular enough, HI DERE Brad Meltzer). Comics being taken seriously will result in new readers more than (or before) new writers.

The Grim 'n' Gritty explosion was caused by Watchmen/TDKR being written up in newspapers rather than conference papers. Maybe the latter influenced the former, but I disagree.

I've just read the thread Huk pointed at, and it is entirely boneheaded though, it's like NASCAR fans getting to set a syllabus on taking fast cars seriously, and starting by arguing as to whether to use the go-faster flames or the naked lady silhouettes.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Yes starting with "Birthright" sets the tone nicely.

There are lot of other art forms that are plenty ridiculous when you think about them: film noir, religious painting, Philip Roth novels, I dunno.
