I don't think we have that over here. Frowny face.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I went and they only gave me the Marvel and Dark Horse freebies. I was really hoping to get a better cross section! At least I got the Runaways thing, which is what I really wanted. Not that it was good or anything.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Saturday, 6 May 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Ditto likewise on the Runaways. I also picked up the JLU freebie, and bought the newest Hellboy TPB and the my BKV pulls.

c(''c) (Leee), Saturday, 6 May 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

I picked up:
Bluff & Tales From A Forgotten Planet (Narwain)
Mr. Jean (D&Q)
Amelia Rules (Renaissance)
Fantagraphics Funny Book
The Preposterous Voyages of IronHide Tom (AdHouse) (This is FANTASTIC)
Star Wars/Conan (Dark Horse)
Transformers (IDW)
Free Scott Pilgrim (Oni)
X-Men/Runaways (Marvel)
Donald Duck (Gemstone)

On the shelf were multiple copies of last year's free Ultimate X-Men, which was so bad that it kept me away from the book for far longer than would otherwise have happened.

Madolan, Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I grabbed:

X-Men/Runaways
Owly
Mr. Jean
Funny Book
and some Shonen Jump thing.

The Yellow Kid, Saturday, 6 May 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

My shop had a three-book limit. Unfortunately. So I just picked up the two Fantagraphics books and the D&Q (Mr. Jean, I guess?). I would've checked out a lot of other stuff, given the option.

Oh, and they also had about a bazillion copies of Countdown To Infinite Crisis that they were giving away. Har har.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Obv we don't have this here in Portugal either, but my local comic book shop's nice enough (and sufficiently furnished with US contacts) to have taken advantage of a local "read more" book-discount intiative to give its patrons some free comix anyway. I got:

"The Best Of Dork Storm" (absolutley pitiful, oh-so-precious wallowing in "we're a bit rubbish at real life, us geeks" sentiments; ugly art, too.)
A Uncle Scrooge/Mickey Mouse comic (pretty awesome - Mickey story is drawn by Carl Barks!I'd no idea he ever even handled disney non-ducks)
"The Adventures Of Paul" (haven't read yet)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I got:

X-Men/Runaways
Scott Pilgrim
Fantagraphics Funny Book
Hellboy
Archie

The Runaways one is not very good, but it's kind of interesting how different the characters' appearances and personalities are from the normal comic.

31g (31g), Sunday, 7 May 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I GOT NO FREE COMICS, BECAUSE I WENT TWENTY MINUTES TO CLOSING... BUT I DID GET A "FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2006" HAT, WHICH I PROMPTLY LEFT AT LAURA'S.

ALSO GOT THE ROCKETO TRADE :D

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Sunday, 7 May 2006 04:50 (twenty years ago)

Ian why didn't you tell me you wanted free comics

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 8 May 2006 05:27 (twenty years ago)

Runaways/X-Men was pretty silly and I haven't read any of my other free comics, but I did get the new Gotham Central trade and a Love & Rockets book at a discount.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 May 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

laura, i overheard some other dude saying that you were all out :O

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Monday, 8 May 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I didn't get any because I suck. Did D&Q put out a new FCBD "Adventures of Paul" or was that last year's?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 8 May 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Two book limits are lame. Gotta go back to Dalton, Georgia, where I could probably get copies of every Free Comic Book Day comic since '01, or so. All's I took was Donald Duck and the Runaways deal. Didn't see Owly, which would've probably taken Marvel's place. I have absolutely no knowledge about the Runaways whatsoever, but this free thing, while not exactly good, has intrigued me. Do they reprint them in standard size, or only in the Jughead Double Digest format?

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

i didn't know there was a donald duck freebie.. was it carl barks stories?

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Nope. The cover's some "forgotten" Barks cover from a '50's issue that didn't contain any Barks stories. Inside are three late '80's reprints from Don Rosa, William Van Horn, and some other dude. Haven't read it yet, but they explain all this on the inside front cover.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Choco, Runaways has four or five digest-sized trades, but if you want to go fancy-like, it does have a full-sized hardcover that collects the first three trades (aka "season 1"), and it costs roughly the same on Amazon as the three put together. Plus, nifty character studies in the book and the actual pitch for the series, which is really cool for nerds like me.

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Ian of course we were all out by the end of the day, but I could have saved you a packet! Reap one (1) benefit from me working at a comic book store!

Laurah (laurah), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I missed it at the store, but just got to the library after work to return some DVDs and BOOYAH! Owly, Tokyopop, Archie, Donald Duck, JLU, and X-Men/Runaways.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

i went to 2 stores near their closing time and they were like "here's 50 comics!"

-rainbow bum- (-rainbow bum-), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 23:21 (twenty years ago)
