Jack Chick, dudes!

More people have read Jack Chick comics than those by Morrison, Bendis, Brubaker, and Claremont combined. And yet he's only been mentioned by names four times in ilcomix history. I'm his target audience (aka, a damned unbeliever) and kinda love his style, even though I hate his message. I'm not even sure if it's just one guy or about a million assistants coming up with crazy shit. Anyway, discuss.

In my high school days I spent a lot of time on the Internet reading these and cracking up. My chief frustration is that you never see the really outre ones stuck on people's windshields or lying in the gutter - it's always the same old THIS WAS YOUR LIFE instead of one of the more xenophobic and bizarre narratives where you learn how hula hoops are part of the devil's plan or whatever. I'd love to see a variety pack of all the individual ones that attack other religions or denominations with the same exact plot: Single Mom is excited by visits from evangelist from Evil Religion X. Kids are confused and worried. Chick-Style Christian Male appears from the wings and beats back the proselytizer with shocking true facts he'd never been privy to about his own religion. "WHAAAAAAT? Do you mean that Selene was originally the name for the MOON GOD?!?!?!" Both Mom AND the would-be canvasser for Satan get converted on the spite. Rinse and repeat.

The best "WHAAAAAT?" moment is probably in "The Sissy?", when a grizzled and anti-god trucker is won over thusly:

TRUCKER: In my book, any man that turns the other cheek is a chump!
CHICK SURROGATE: Duke...if God almighty could turn himself into a man, like us, with all that power still inside him... and some dude asked him to fight... who would win?
TRUCKER: HEY! That wouldn't be a fair fight... the God-Man would KILL him!

If there's anything worth celebrating about these tracts it's probably their amazingly clever re-use of old art where necessary. I seem to remember a soccer story and a basketball story using the exact same frames, with only dialogue changes necessary to smooth over the difference. Chick really seemed driven to think of everything a person could possibly be into and build it into a narrative along with his usual themes.

The Imp #2 (zine by um... google... Dan Raeburn) offered an extended commentary on Chick's work - if memory serves, it was a shockingly exhaustive piece, combining the available biographical snippets and chronological facts to chart the evolution of Chick's drawing and storytelling style...

There's somebody who's drawn a lot of the latter-day Chick tracts whose style looks VERY much like Marshall Rogers', although I don't think it's him...

Long before I'd heard of JTC and the extent of his work, I found a copy of This Was Your Life on a train. I flicked through it thinking wow! this is completely fucked up but the dude knows how to put a message across. Of course, I was educated by evil Mary-worshipping Catholics so it bounced right off me.

Also, ALL HAIL PANTS! AND ALSO SATAN!

I like the one where a blustering SCIENCE TEACHER is reduced to stammering excuses and eventually converts after his handsome student brings the smackdown with the TRUE FACTS about his precious 'evolution'. 'OMG! He knows Piltdown Man was a forgery! That's like our biggest secret and the KEY TO EVERYTHING!'

His views on Judaism are pretty weird - he's pro-Jew, believing they will all convert moments before the Rapture.

Where does he get his money from? My friend wrote to him asking for some tracts for a giggle, and got airmailed him a box of like a hundred to the UK (a country that 'Islam has brought to its knees', by the way) for free.

This is a widely held view among Christian nut-jobs, if by "pro-Jew" you mean "pro-Israel". I don't think Chick is pro-Jew in any real sense - there is one which explicitly states that non-Christian Jews are all DAMNED.

I'd like to try the long sideways, stapled at the short edge format sometime. I love the way that when you open a CT it's about five times as wide as it is tall.

lol Chick's not very favorably inclined to Catholicism FYI

it's pretty clear he's totally bonkers from what few personal details have emerged

there was a guy in the 90s who did a comic-book length analysis of Jack Chick, went to his offices to meet him, etc. blanking on his name, having trouble googling it

I agree. I think he's currently catering to the tastes of the people who read his comics as camp in the hope of saving a few souls among the way, and I'm bothered that everyone is taking his bait.
