This stuff is really, really great. At least once you hit V.2. V1 wasn't bad, but it doesn't hold a candle to the manic greatness that is Gerber's run on the title. Defenders versus the KKK dressed up as snake-men? Check. The Guardians of the Galaxy and the Defenders versus the Badoon? Double-check. A malicious elf and a baby deer that houses the mind of a malicious foe all whilst going up against the Headmen? Triple-check.
Don't hesistate. Pick it up for a dose of the craziest of the crazy.

V3, collecting the whole Headmen saga, is poss. the single finest Essentials book you can buy.

I am intruiged by these recommendations and may follow them. I got Essential Howard the Duck on the strength of gushing ILC reports, however, and was underwhelmed, so maybe Gerber's not really for me?

semi-topical satire doesn't age as well as awesomely insane superheroics though

OH GOD YOU BBCODE SUCKASS TURD
Actually, chap, Gerber is a bit of an aquired taste, particularly for the density and plethora of prose, which was the house style at the time. That said, I suspect DEFENDERS will be kinder to new readers than HOWARD.
