the stuff that gets advertised in comic books

kinda weird! okay i do love it when looking at old ones and i see pictures demonstrating the AWESOME GRAPHICAL POWER of the NEW SEGA GENESIS (incidentally, do americans find MEGA DRIVE as stupid a name for a videogame system as i find GENESIS?) (further sideline - does nintendo ds actually stand for anything? at all?)

final crisis #2 has-

batman 'got milk' campaign (how long have they been photoshopping the milk on stock photos btw)
dorling-kindersley batmobile owners manual
american government explaining that doing drugs is not cool
join the navy
stunt biking dew tour on nbc
god of war psp ('forged in the depths of hades ... so yes. it's a limited edition' i cannot for the life of me see anyone in the world, ever, being persuaded by this slogan)
secret agent clank, for psp
and 'a new abc family original series', middle man

i guess the bit that confuses me is the imagined teenage audience all this seems to be geared to (got milk, videogames, antidrugs) do the advertisers / advertising dept. of DC really think that the audience for their stuff is actually mainly teenage - or are the adverts secretly appealing to an older audience who wouldn't respond to adverts that made an overt appeal to (20, 30, 40)somethings? ("got milk? for your KIDS?") (n.b. of the many people who were children around the first 'got milk' campaign, a substantial number are now adults and may in fact have children of their own.)

In Warcraft 3, constantly clicking the bovine unit Tauren may cause the unit to eventually say "Got Milk?", as milks are mostly produced by bovine animals.

I remember the first time I read American comic books I was genuinely distracted by the ads, because Finnish comic books only had ads in the inside and back covers, never in the middle of the story.

Also, Finnish comic books always had at least two 24-page stories in them, often more. Back when I read it, the local X-Men book always had two 24-page stories in one monthly issue... The Finnish X-Men was running a few years behind the American title, and I remember there was a genuine concern about what would happen once the Finnish X-Men caught up the American one, because they only released one 24-page X-Men book a month. Oh, how things have changed!

I miss those crappy Howard Rogofsky and Robert Bell ads.

The first month's worth of Marvel comics I ever got on import were around the time the new seasons' Saturday Morning Kids TV came out: I was absolutely mind-boggled at i. the number of channels and ii. the number of shows I had never in a million years heard of. The only one I can now remember is the Berenstein Bears though.

When I worked in a comic shop and my duties included bagging and pricing the back issues I became very very familiar with late 80s and early 90s back cover ads: ON THE 1,315,893RD DAY WE RESTED.

The Bullet Boys album sleeve must have been printed on more DC back covers than actual albums, by some astronomical factor.

Modern comics need to have more ads for bogus bodybuilding programmes and devices which facilitate the viewing of ladies' underwear.

I'm glad this thread came up, because I was reading some 80s Batman stuff this morning, and I found THE GREATEST of all the Hostess Superhero Ads, which I will post tomorrow.

Also, I miss the double-splash ads for the new fall Saturday Morning line-ups.

It's "dual screen", isn't it?

Forget it... just enjoy your Hostess Cup Cakes.

a man can hardly read a funnybook these days without someone making him feel bad for his dope smoking habit.

Weren't all those 'tobacco is whacko IS YOU@RE A TEEN' adverts paid for by cigarette companies?

Vic Fluro, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 22:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Don't feel bad, ian. For some reason my proposed "Date rape is my anti-drug" full-pager was rejected.

They were inept enough for me to think that's the case.
