So what's their deal? I found them thru mention of The Mourning Star (which also seems cool -- worth trying to hunt down the two volumes if i liked what i read on SGCB?) and they've got all kinds of cool stuff. i liked Crime World (http://studygroupcomics.com/main/2012/07/crime-world-part-1-by-david-king/) and Barfight (http://studygroupcomics.com/main/2012/07/barfight-by-simon-roy/). [dear forks,] What other stuff is worth checking out?

that's uncannily like anders nilson's stuff

So... Study Group was a pretty highly-regarded print anthology edited by Zack Soto, and for quite awhile it was also a semi-private message board somewhat analogous to the ilx (or perhaps noize borad) of alt comics. And now it's a co op serializing site w/a lot of the same folks. And Zack did put out a new printed one last year iirc.

Looks like a lot of good stuff on there - I started with Mourning Star, don't even know what to try next

i like the post-apoc / scifi piece today. all the comix they publish seem to have this kind of loose sense of plot. i'm never really clear about what is going on. i wonder if it's an aesthetic choice or just a failure of storytelling (bc in other ways esp genre, setting the storytelling is really strong).

Mordy, Monday, 20 August 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

were you talking about this one?
http://studygroupcomics.com/main/disappearing-town-polaroid-by-morgan-jeske/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=disappearing-town-polaroid-by-morgan-jeske

cuz i was pretty thrilled with this, heavy handed as it kinda was, the artwork was more than enough to keep me in

Nhex, Thursday, 23 August 2012 02:02 (eleven years ago) link

yes, that one. i love the BRIEFCASE FULL OF DANGER

Mordy, Thursday, 23 August 2012 04:34 (eleven years ago) link

oh ok i misread your comment a bit. yeah, i agree with you, i'm not really down with much of the erm, scragglier aesthetic choices of half the stories, but really down with this Paul Pope/Geof Darrow/Moebius kinda stuff

Nhex, Thursday, 23 August 2012 04:38 (eleven years ago) link

i guess i want more cohesive storytelling from graphic novel / comix medium, but i can respect things that are doing other stuff and this does that other stuff well enough that my complaint is pretty tepid

Mordy, Thursday, 23 August 2012 04:42 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i totally feel you here. i think the complaint is valid though, no reason you can't do interesting stuff that doesn't look like outsider art, or actually show they're practiced artisans, etc.

Conor Willumsen's new strip up on Study Group is some "holey moley" stuff. Wow.

OH YEAH. I'm all up in this Gilgamesh. I found a copy of The Epic of Gilgamesh hanging around work last summer and was all about that, so I'm jazzed for this.

Never change, sad lonely bastards who write indie comics! Reading all those many, many nearly-identical doomed relationship confessionals is like rubbing a worry stone.
