btw just to derail and talk some more about Ellen Allien/Apparat/Modeselektor, this is Apparat's "Arcadia" off of Walls which I think is really awesome:

thought of doing the countdown here and then realized "hey how many threads can i start about me and my fascinating opinions before i become king douche" was a valid question. xpost

Bend It Like Bender! is currently rocking my sweet world like a giant male/female duetted popsharktopus

Really well written, prob too pop pretty for the metal dudes, and too metal for the mainstream so obscurity here we come.

well, speaking of which, have YOU heard...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK_trE9qdfY

I've been going mental for the record that's on for the past week. Very different production-wise to Devin's work (or anything else ever made), but equally kickass.

hmmmmmm. thats going to have to grow on me i think, first listen didnt catch me (despite shouty childrens choir bits, which seem to be in that "sounds i like" category most of the time.)

idk, lead vocal has that post ministry pixelated thing going on thats tough for me to deal with anymore so

fair notice: stuck listening to it on the internal iphone speakers so theres i am sure much going on that i am not hearing.

ha at first I thought you were talking about the Apparat track and I was all "...waht"

HI DERE, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 20:08 (thirteen years ago) link

it's one of the most wilfully distorted, fucked-up recordings in the history of pop-metal, I'll give it that - maybe you'd prefer their cleaner recordings! endless, nameless was very much a 'fuck-you' experiment - I just happen to love it in all its abrasive glory

slightly low quality but what can ya do:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPs02a1bie0

If that fails, I'll get back to praising Devin Townsend, and not a word more of this shall e'er be spoken

LJ, did you ever hear Black Moth Super Rainbow? Their Dandelion Gum album kind of comes across as Boards of Canada on ecstacy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYQMs_zXF9k

also they are willing to go much creepier than anything I've seen from BoC (whom you know I love):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC6aAs4kkbY&feature=related

HI DERE, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 20:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Lollipopsichord starts off sounding like every band Pitchfork has 'broken' for the past 5 years, finds a flute and some meaty synths, doesn't come from anything remotely like the same fragile pastoral-hip-hop sound-world of BoC, has some mysterious vocals, ends. Nonetheless, I refuse to discount them.

Sun Lips is much better - like, MUCH better, while still being a bit garishly this-must-belong-to-some-wave-right. I like the video, even if it is a bit silly. The flute works really well this time. Even less BoCesque. Got a sorta psych-folk vibe, just done with synths. I bet they read their blogs.

Still, I may give their stuff a proper go...

was gonna say Resolve! is my new fave track but tbh there isn't a song that's any less than balling on Addicted and that is glorious truth

just wanted to post and thank JJJJusten for "Bondage Goat Zombie" - because this is why i don't vote in polls like that one, because the likes of Bondage Goat Zombie has no chance of winning

bearotaur say "I am so sorry" to me! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

btw JJ the 'big reveal' was gonna be that Devin Townsend is an ex-member of The Wildhearts and the two are mutually enamoured of each other in a big sorta way - 'Resolve!' is a Wildhearts tribute, in fact

I have absolutely no doubt you'll go ape for quite a lot of Wildhearts material (if not necessarily the distortion-bomb blow-out) so take it as a VERY strong recommendation

which judging from far cry is totally booooooring. moving on.

harvey milk is already in my comfort zone, although this album doesnt really measure up to the early stuff imo

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 23:24 (thirteen years ago) link

ha the new HM was supposed to be the return to their early style after the more produced/catchy/amazing "Life ... the Best Game in Town"

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link

it took this hm album for me to realize that aprt of the appeal there is that theres a weird touchstone between hm singer and the power bellowing that foetus used to do a lot of the time, esp in clint ruin/wiseblood mode. in retrospect shoulda voted this somewhat higher

rihanna i heard and found woefully disappointing from somebody that was so good so recently

xpost yeah see thats the prob w/chasing your past is that when you try to do it, it never seems to actually work tho

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 23:31 (thirteen years ago) link

first impression of zola jesus was that the world doesnt need yet another fucking siouxsie copycat but theres something kind of interesting going on musically that gets me in a way that makes up for finding her voice reallll boring. this night song which i guess must be the single maybe? is pretty bland, but the song that youtube says is named stridulum is kind afantastic at the end so - idk, peeps that dig this should lead me through the zone here.

3EF was one of my top votes, so i dont really need to dig in there.

tallest man on earth - wow there are not a lot of names worse than this, but i havent heard a note yet, so ill reserve judgement. uh ok so people are way overselling the guitar work on this, not that its bad, but its kinda standard decent acoustic picking stuff, vocals dont bug me as much as they seem to for others - kinda a more cautious version of paleo. in fact people who are into this should just go ahead and go check out some Paleo, its kinda this dude done better. this is ok i guess.

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 2 February 2011 23:43 (thirteen years ago) link

hey jj have you seen mother of fire locally? not a souixsie copycat but really cool band that might appeal to a fan of early bashees stuff, witchy female vox + electric violin + dub bass + post punk drumz

basedketball (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 February 2011 00:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont really need to hear any more kylie minogue, i just dont get it and i never will and thats fine

this warpaint thing (undertow) seems to be a bunch of fiddly nonsense, messy oververbed and look at me! lazy cant be bothered attitude, dont like stuff like this at all really. second song now (majesty) and actually thats too soft, i really fucking hate this.

sun araw - started with ma holo and man i am tired of endless loopy nonsense as a thing i guess idk if its just not getting high anymore or what but i am done w/this stuff. beat cop now and unless this goes somewhere soon before we all die, i just dont have any idea what this is supposed to do for me, it just sounds like unfun dub with half the ideas and several decades late.

xpost: sorry was out selling stuff - have not seen mother of fire, but could see totally digging them from that description, will investigate

i know im coming over as all crotchety old man on this thread, but i actually really enjoy these end of year things because i kinda live in a cave outside of my weirdo things im way too into musically these days so like 90% of these lists are full of things ive never ever heard. and despite being a little bitch about most of it so far, no offense intended to peeps that dig this stuff, my ears are as wrong as anybody elses imo.

bump to just express my bafflement about taylor swift making the top twenty when she is absolutely unredeemable in every way and completely talentless and awful.

I'm not even sure my ballot was counted. There's literally SO MUCH on here I don't even know, but I thought I'd voted for fairly obvious stuff. Oh well.

goole, Thursday, 3 February 2011 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

so no age - this is like time traveling back to 5 years ago at a load records showcase at big vs bar, but scrape off all the sweat and turn things down to a nice manageable level and for gods sake lets tune those guitars and shout less. in other words this sounds like la bowlderizing a providence time capsule for the kids. barf.

gayngs - this has some promise maybe, glitcho stuff at the beginning but now theres smooth jazz saxophone and breathy singing and fucking hell is this the year of reverb or what? and now thanks to wikipedia i realize that these dudes are from minneapolis, and some of them are friends of mine. sorry. and this cover of godley and creme fucking blows and makes me irrationally angry.

I love looking at threads like these because I feel like I totally enter into foreign territory. Like, how bad is it that I almost never recognize any of the artist names, either. I'm going to try to blame nursing school, but seriously only recognizing, like, 4 names at all? (And one of them is Kylie Minogue?! UH)

going to need this again i think

this selena gomez thing is ok in a "didnt madonna already do that "Music" album a while ago" way. actually i like it less and less the more i hear. her voice is boring to me, altho proficient i guess.

does anything ever actually happen in this gang gang dance song

i already said what i had to say about this pistol annies nonsense on the main thread

i am shocked to discover that i think i actually like this tune-yards thingy, the arpeggiated vocal stuff is interesting - this sounds like somebody that listened to a lot of the right peter gabriel records but maybe took some of the vocal tricks a little too much to heart.
