Daerest John,
If you were about to buy a Telecaster, were generally a fan of punk, garage and indie-rock in the Pixies/Sleater-Kinney vein would you broaden your look to humbucker/P-90-equipped guitars as well?
Also, is an archtop (like a Ibanez Artcore or an Epiphone Casino/Dot) a bad idea to learn on? They seem kind of fun.

I will try to answer these questions as soon as I am less hung over than I am now.
― John Justen, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 05:13 (sixteen years ago) link
Oh what the hell.
Telecaster - I am totally down with the classic single coil config, but I also enjoy P-90's. When it comes to humbuckers, I really prefer the wide-range humbuckers (old school chrome covers with Fender written across the top) Be forewarned though, both the wide-range (which are non-standard sized) and P-90 options limit your ability to sub out with other pickup options, so make sure you like them as they are. Also acceptable, but not my thing - humbucker in neck position, single coil in bridge.
Telecasters with standard size humbuckers in the bridge = guy who wants to look like he likes teles, but is actually living a lie.
Archtops? sure. Unless you are small statured, in which case the bigger body might get in your way. Any guitar that doesn't suck is fine to learn on.
― John Justen, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 05:32 (sixteen years ago) link
that was hard
I'm unhungover now, and still agree with what I said up there, so it must be true. (no joke it took me fifteen painful, distracted minutes to write that last night)
― John Justen, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 16:57 (sixteen years ago) link
Thanks, it sounds like I'm fairly safe sticking to my Telecaster plan for now.
second question: I need to get a Pod-type of thing for hotel room practicing. Any opinion on the various makes/models?
― milo z, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link
Well, the thing that people forget is that pretty much all of the tiny "starter" effects processors have the left side of the stereo out set up for headphone output, meaning that all the Zoom and Digitech cheapola stompy baby processors are actually Pods in disguise (this fact is often glaringly omitted by people trying to sell you a pod as well.
I dig the Zoom G1, mostly because it's super-el-cheapo (street $59). Haven't heard the newest digitech thingy (RP70 maybe?), but it'll probably be fine too. I think the base model pods are selling more on the ubiquity of the name than the feature set vs. price ratio.

I finally bought a Telecaster (from Japan)!
and a Japanese Les Paul!

an Edwards "E-TE-120" - relic, (meh, but it didn't cost extra) model w/ higher-grade pickups and stuff.

Les Paul looks like this: http://i1.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/d8/13/3dbc_1.JPG
the maple grain is a little Guns n Roses for me, but I really liked the Les Paul body when I was trying guitars out.

John, what is the absolute cheapest electric guitar that isn't a complete piece of shit? I intend to use this solely for direct inputting to my sound card, to give you some idea of how little will be asked of it.
― Dan I., Friday, 6 June 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link
Or would any shitty guitar at all work for that purpose?
― Dan I., Friday, 6 June 2008 00:58 (sixteen years ago) link

― Abbott, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:04 (sixteen years ago) link
Okay, I've got to stop looking at this thread to try to figure out what makes it NSFW. (Or maybe I should get a job and things will be clearer?)
Hope you are okay, Abbott!
― Sara R-C, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:09 (sixteen years ago) link
Off the top of my head, if I were going to send someone out looking for the cheapest decent guitar out there, I'd look at the Ibanez GAX30, which is about $150. More importantly, the cheaper the guitar, the more you want to look for simplicity. Quality between (recognizable brands, and not the versions of those brands avail in Target/Best Buy/Walmart) $150 guitars is pretty much all the same, so every added feature you don't need (tremolo in particular) subtracts from the materials used elsewhere. If you want to/can spend more $$, I'll have more complicated suggestions.
Oh, and Sara, this thread is marked NSFW because of the day that HI DERE and I decided to mark all the ITR threads NSFW, in order to annoy people on Site New Answers.
― John Justen, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:19 (sixteen years ago) link
Oh, and also, feel free to spew out a list of possible candidates and i'll let you know what i think, Dan.

Thx John. I was seriously wondering if GUITARS were Not Safe For Work, and if so, what the hell else I might be missing.
Probably not a good sign for my mind that I was thinking that way, huh.

Dear John Justen,I have a question that I think you may be able to answer. Do you know any good+cheap amp repair-persons in the twin cities metro area? I have a 4-channel amp that I really like, but only one of the channels really works properly so I want to get it fixed.
thanks in advance,Dan

Similar question: Refretting? Of an old classical guitar? You fix. How much.

Dan I, are you talking about a home stereo sort of thing or? i am kind of detatched from the hifi world, so i don't know how helpful i can be, but i can certainly try. hit me up with the manufacturer/model number and ill get the info i can.
rrrrabies - ugh i am afraid to even quote a price because i am so far behind on repairs right now - the tricky thing is that if the rest of the frets are worn, replacing just one could have kind of deleterious effects - might have to either level or refret the rest of the neck which is $$$$. id probably have to take a closer look at it before i could give you any really solid ideas of cost.
other dan - i have no explanation of that. i couldnt sit through the whole thing, so now i am worried that blooddiamonds.jpg of me shows up part way through since you sought out my help directly, but i am hoping not

Sorry, should have mentioned the type of amp. It's not a hi-fi thing, it's an instrument amp, a Roland KC-300. It's a keyboard amp with 4 input channels that have separate volume knobs. Right now 3 of the inputs don't work, and I have at least 3 instruments that I'd like to pipe into this thing simultaneously!
― Dan I., Tuesday, 15 December 2009 07:20 (fifteen years ago) link
oh ok that makes sense. i could probably take a look at that, odds are that you just have bad input jacks - again tho note what i said upthread about not being exactly speedy at the moment. if you need it quickly, you could probably try EMI in mpls (johnson st NE i think?) otherwise, all my work type contact crap is at www.eclipsemusic.org
