While this board was down, I posted this on the Livejournal Monican Spies page:

On Oct. 30, 2006, I gave a talk at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

You can view the video here (the editor included the entire Animatrix end credits in the middle of the video. The talk continues afterwards, so just skip that part):

If you have trouble accessing the feed from the first link, try this.
You have a choice of 4 links for audio and video feeds:

Here's a page with an introduction, some further links and information on the other speakers in the series, if you're interested.

The animated Terminator compilation is being delayed, along with the T4 movie.

Meanwhile, I'm off to Korea again to work on a series of shorts for Gametap.com. They're commemorating the 10th anniversary of Tomb Raider and have commissioned animated films featuring interpretations of Lara Croft by various animators. I agreed to do it as long as I get to write my own story. My script has been approved. I'm doing a 12 - 15 minuted story that will be split into short segments (like the original AF pilot on LTV). Drew Neumann is doing the music.

Inspired by discussion on this board last year about macguffins. That's all I'll say.

That's awesome! You and Drew Neumann teaming up again! I am definitely looking forward to this!. Can you at least tell us, when the piece will be published? Why segments? Will it be shown on MTV or as a trailer for... something else?

Pointy haired Lara with leather straps... sweet.

Tomb Raider always seemed to me to be the sort of thing that was born out of stuff like Aeon Flux (of course, in the wrong way), so this will be an interesting ouroboros, in a way. Aeon spawns imitators who don't get her role quite right, and then she goes in and corrects them. Brilliant!

Thanks for the links, Peter, it was an interesting view. By the way, after reading this board last night, I had a dream in which you and I and several of my friends (maybe people on this board?) were watching and critiquing television shows, sitting at home in my living room. Then I wake up, check the board here, and watch your video. Very funny experience.

Awesomeness.

Peter, I liked hearing about your interest in keeping events (in Tide) in the moment. Thus, avoiding distractions from the moment like flash backs. And also not using pre packaged language cues as a "cheat" to gaining the desired reaction, but rather remaining resourseful within the framework of the medium.

My thinkning is that this kind of approach would help make for a more pure sensory experience. Kind of like, maybe, how serious chefs keep ingrediants on a relatively similar level, not using anything ready made beyond being a basic ingrediant.

It's always great to hear about new work. If there's no other way to see them, this might actually get me to subscribe to GameTap! (Well, I guess I was curious about the new Sam & Max game...)

This is pretty incredible. I love the idea of Peter and Drew Neumann again. SO right, that music of his..Liked your dream Matt.
