wtf @ that sports thread.

Jesus fucking christ.

nb this:

btw, there's also a pretty key flaw in the music/sports comparison, Guy. If a song lasts forever, that's typically not a good thing. There's a reason why people hate progressive rock. Songs have to have conclusions in order to be songs.

That whole thread is just about everything I hate about this board in one handy package.

why do people look down on ketchup? it's just tomato paste and vinegar and sugar.

That "sports and the people who hate them" was still somewhere on the New Answers page last time I looked.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 13:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I think that thread just goes to show how much people like to argue and google-trump*.

eg: "i hate sports, always have, i've never paid one single iota of attention towards sports nor sportsfans but guys the marathon's original distance has varied between 20 miles + 10,000 metres and 42k for the last 15 olympics! only in 1920 was the precise metrage within a 1% variance of the original Phidippedaeic course, won of course was South African endurance legend Branson Harvey."

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 14:58 (eighteen years ago) link

*"google-trump" is my copywritten and unwritten use of is strictly prohibited.

Guys...this is not really "enemy" level discourse here...but...is it just me or is Rumpie completely fucked up out of her mind? Chilli and bolognese are the same thing. Out of office replies are her arch enemy. Eating ice cream in public is psychotic. Seriously, is it just me? Are these completely unreasonable things to say?

I think maybe she's just foreign.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:16 (eighteen years ago) link

And not normal foreign like British but weird foreign like Welsh or Scottish or Druid or something.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:18 (eighteen years ago) link

The ice cream thing almost made me bust a gut due to shrieking laughter.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:19 (eighteen years ago) link

It's one of those things where, if you want to worry about it, you could work yourself into a lather with weird thoughts thinking "OMG, I am eating ice cream BY MYSELF, exactly like the movie serial killer does to feign innocence before or after his crimes." In the same way you could be self-conscious about going to the movies by yourself, worrying what people will think, but if you've ever actually done it, you realize no one gives a damn. So, yeah, worrying about eating ice cream = dud.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Listen even foreigners were against the ice cream thing.

(there was also a kid that went to my high school that was a complete dork. maybe I can't speak, since I was too. anyways, long story short, he was 16 and having sex with his 12 year old neighbor, and photographing it. kid brought the film to Wal-Mart. yeah, we wasn't bright. upon returning to high school, he was forever nicknamed "Kiddy Porn". I've since seen him on both myspace and whenever I check the CT List of Sexual Predators for people I went to high school with and the occasional attractive MILF type that slept with a 14 year old (which I check once every few months).

-- Alan Conceicao (deadandrestles...), September 27th, 2005 7:01 PM. (Alan Conceicao)

claims the "we" wasn't a freudian slide but is disturbingly comfortable with admitting he likes to check sexual predator lists for "MILF-type"s?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

it's way better than any other ilm thread because chuck eddy hasn't barged in on it to spout nonsense yet.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:34 (eighteen years ago) link

how can you fuck w/ the band? i mean, jesus, best rock three-part harmonies ever, levon and rick just the coolest fucking guys. and they were like 24 when all of this shit went down! you gotta love how loose but tight they played it. only other band i've heard do that: rod stewart's backing group on his first three solo records. (and the faces too.)

& bringing rockism into a discussion about folk music and early dylan is such a fucking reach! i mean, folk music was ENTIRELY about preservation of song, oral tradition, etc. to retroactively place value systems on that idea -- especially now that we can enjoy the fruits of their labors, it having been disseminated everywhere, songs like "john henry" not lost to the winds but still here and now -- is just silly, ridiculous and bullshit grandstanding.

i completely concurr on the irrational stressing of "authenticity" and all of that, but somebody had to write those songs, and shouldn't we be happy about that? i mean, yeah, everything is great in its own way blah blah blah but some of these folks now decried as rockist formed the paths for those we love now. give em some fucking credit!

The Rolling Stones Aftermath. A band that is often credited with originating the "hard" style of rock music. Had a darker vision than their well-known contemporaries, the Beatles.

are you guys confusing chuck with don allred or am i? the thread's much more tolerable if you skip don's posts (i think he's unreadable anyway - BUY YOURSELF ONE PARAGRAPH BREAK, BUDDY).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:52 (eighteen years ago) link

They're both on that thread. don can be hard to read, but he's usually got a lot more actual ideas in there than some, despite writing in the VV house style. Sometimes he's even got jokes in there that are actually kind of funny.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

oh wait now i see that post, wherein he faithfully lets us ilm readers know what an important rock artiste such as metal mike saunders thinks about the whole thing. shameful.

i can dig that don might not be everybody's cuppa. but he has seriously blown me away in the past. like, holyshit whatthefuckwuzzthat? seriously smoking good stuff. please don't lump him in with a lot of the other half-wits that pipe in on ilm and then run away like cowards. he is more than capable of backing his shit up if you call him on it. he would be happy to explain EXACTLY what he means in any of his posts. plus, he is just a helluva nice guy. i wish i knew more people like him.

metal mike i give a get out of jail free card every time cuz he is completely insane and he wrote "They Saved Hitler's Cock".

b-b-but tomato paste and vinegar and sugar isn't an evil combination. a lot of different sauces use that as a base.

it's just annoying to me that ketchup is considered lowbrow and you can't enjoy a hot dog if it's not topped with mustardseed scraped from the shoe of a dead itinerant french farmer.

order of hate:

1) ppl who post all in ONE PARAGRAPH, ALWAYS
2) chuck eddy when he's in "here's an email from metal mike" mode (he's cool otherwise)
3) ppl who post EVERY TIME someone else disses a band they also hate just to say something like "the man is wise" or "vindication!" or something, just to make sure we haven't forgotten that they hate that band
