Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I was enjoying the Bob Dylan Doc thread for a while, but then it went the way of all things ILM.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 29 September 2005 15:41 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:25 (eighteen years ago) link

in what way? i can't be bothered to actually read it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

it's way better than any other ilm thread because chuck eddy hasn't barged in on it to spout nonsense yet.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:34 (eighteen years ago) link

how can you fuck w/ the band? i mean, jesus, best rock three-part harmonies ever, levon and rick just the coolest fucking guys. and they were like 24 when all of this shit went down! you gotta love how loose but tight they played it. only other band i've heard do that: rod stewart's backing group on his first three solo records. (and the faces too.)

& bringing rockism into a discussion about folk music and early dylan is such a fucking reach! i mean, folk music was ENTIRELY about preservation of song, oral tradition, etc. to retroactively place value systems on that idea -- especially now that we can enjoy the fruits of their labors, it having been disseminated everywhere, songs like "john henry" not lost to the winds but still here and now -- is just silly, ridiculous and bullshit grandstanding.

i completely concurr on the irrational stressing of "authenticity" and all of that, but somebody had to write those songs, and shouldn't we be happy about that? i mean, yeah, everything is great in its own way blah blah blah but some of these folks now decried as rockist formed the paths for those we love now. give em some fucking credit!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

jorel, did you miss the part where he said how much he hated The Band, how much the sucked? Or maybe you, like Ned, think this is wisdom.

xpost

The Rolling Stones Aftermath. A band that is often credited with originating the "hard" style of rock music. Had a darker vision than their well-known contemporaries, the Beatles.

are you guys confusing chuck with don allred or am i? the thread's much more tolerable if you skip don's posts (i think he's unreadable anyway - BUY YOURSELF ONE PARAGRAPH BREAK, BUDDY).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:52 (eighteen years ago) link

They're both on that thread. don can be hard to read, but he's usually got a lot more actual ideas in there than some, despite writing in the VV house style. Sometimes he's even got jokes in there that are actually kind of funny.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

oh wait now i see that post, wherein he faithfully lets us ilm readers know what an important rock artiste such as metal mike saunders thinks about the whole thing. shameful.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

great now there's a band box set thread for these doofuses to chime in on.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:59 (eighteen years ago) link

You guys are going to give yourselves ulcers.

(sorry that's the live version)

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Metal Mike Saunders is awesome. chuck eddy is hilarious.

homos.

Bob Loblaw (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

it is kind of galling to read a self-professed depeche mode and cure fan calling the band soft rock snooze

who was talking shit about the band?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:37 (eighteen years ago) link

ok i've been vaguely mulling this over for a couple days and i still can't figure out what's cansecolike about my ketchup post. i do not want to be affiliated with ilx's own travis bickle. if i have erred, please steer me in the right direction.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:29 (eighteen years ago) link

i can dig that don might not be everybody's cuppa. but he has seriously blown me away in the past. like, holyshit whatthefuckwuzzthat? seriously smoking good stuff. please don't lump him in with a lot of the other half-wits that pipe in on ilm and then run away like cowards. he is more than capable of backing his shit up if you call him on it. he would be happy to explain EXACTLY what he means in any of his posts. plus, he is just a helluva nice guy. i wish i knew more people like him.

metal mike i give a get out of jail free card every time cuz he is completely insane and he wrote "They Saved Hitler's Cock".

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:43 (eighteen years ago) link

"If Hitler's cock could choose a mate/It would ask..for Sharon Tate!"

Come on! it doesn't get much better than that! god, i love that song.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Jody, I think the joke is that you ask a question in your first sentence and then answer it in the second sentence.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 23:51 (eighteen years ago) link

b-b-but tomato paste and vinegar and sugar isn't an evil combination. a lot of different sauces use that as a base.

it's just annoying to me that ketchup is considered lowbrow and you can't enjoy a hot dog if it's not topped with mustardseed scraped from the shoe of a dead itinerant french farmer.

order of hate:

1) ppl who post all in ONE PARAGRAPH, ALWAYS
2) chuck eddy when he's in "here's an email from metal mike" mode (he's cool otherwise)
3) ppl who post EVERY TIME someone else disses a band they also hate just to say something like "the man is wise" or "vindication!" or something, just to make sure we haven't forgotten that they hate that band

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:31 (eighteen years ago) link

i love don, but i find him terribly unreadable. he's always popping up in threads i start

YOU ALMOST STABBED YOURSELF IN THE FACE LIKE A HULKAMANIAC (jaxon), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:43 (eighteen years ago) link

i've called him on it too, and he just says he's not really thinking because it's one of the few times he's not being paid to think about what he's writing.

YOU ALMOST STABBED YOURSELF IN THE FACE LIKE A HULKAMANIAC (jaxon), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:44 (eighteen years ago) link

i like his writing. he takes longer to parse than other writers, but he also has a better way with words than a lot of other writers (and knows a shitload more about music too), so in the end it's worth the effort. i agree that paragraph breaks would help though.

pop contrarianism: so predictable that it's no longer contrary...

if Dylan had had any balls he'd have hired the Turtles as his backing/touring band.

yeah and he should've auditioned for the MONKEES while he was at it
