i feel like tubmlr is mostly successful because of its culture not necessarily its technology which is just mostly blogging, its culture is really not that respectable and is mostly hermetically sealed from the rest of the webb, liek you can drive madd clicks to yr web properties via facebook or twitter but tumblr just leads to more tumblr, facebook bought instagram as a defensive move which kinda makes sense, yahoo bought tumblr cause they think they can leverage the shit out of its synergies and i think they cannot

i see a common refrain is that yahoo is buying it for its userbase - cue all those silicon valley VC ppl who are like "you can/should value a user at $X a head" - it can prob drive traffic to some websites and youtube, but youre right in that anigifs are self-contained

yahoo properties are not synergistic at all though, it's a bunch of cobbled together properties, probably yahoo is fine with that

tumblr is #32 on alexa's web rankings, behind.... wordpress

maybe yahoo is just planning on putting some ads on there, could be worth it i guess, but id have to think at that price theyre depending on people keeping on using it for a long time which seems pretty suspect, especially as theyll prob fuck it up
