the guy highlighting all the hoops he's supposed to jump through is his way of implying the absurdity and unfairness of his having to do so.

IT'S THAT WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER CLIP ALL OVER AGAIN. I knew I hated that movie.

maybe some day i'll be able to look directly at some lady yoga butts without lapsing into an erotic reverie but i don't think so!!!!!!!! because i'm a male person, oh well i guess!

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:56 (eleven years ago) link

to date i'm not aware of a feminism that has pathologized the experience of male heterosexual attraction itself. i know that's what 'they' say about dworkin and butler et al but not having read either of them directly much, i'm inclined to doubt it.

― goole, Thursday, May 30, 2013 4:40 PM (4 minutes ago) Bookmark

I've read arguments that Dworkin is not in fact pathologizing the experience of male heterosexuality but rather pathologizing male heterosexuality as it occurs within the patriarchy (and is constituted by male supremacist culture. I'm not sure I completely buy that explanation though. She clearly suggests that "male-dominant gender hierarchy" is "immune to reform," that within the context of that hierarchy intercourse is always a violation, and that if you believe that "intercourse itself determines women's lower status," the only way out is through the use of modern reproductive technologies that evade intercourse entirely. That "intercourse appears to be the expression of [male] contempt in pure form, in the form of a sex hierarchy; it requires no passion or heart because it is power without invention articulating the arrogance of those who do the fucking."

Sorry, a little off-topic. nb everything Dworkin writes should probably be read in fuller context than I've given here so you can make up your own mind.

By contrast I can't remember ever seeing Butler pathologize male heterosexual attraction.*

agree with whoever said he started with a thesis in mind. it's telling that he practically begged to be able to attend a saa meeting and then just couldn't be bothered

slate follow-up:

Hinds' piece, written for Slate, takes it as a given that male lust is inherently disrespectful to women, apparently because Hinds himself cannot see women as anything but vaginas on legs. Actual feminist men see vaginas on legs and heads on shoulders.

Andy: It's okay to strip people naked in your imagination, as long as you respect their right to not know that's what you're doing. This is accomplished by not gawking, ogling, and drooling, but rather learning to be discreet. Nearly all women and a healthy percentage of men manage to do this every day.

this seems pretty otm to me

Mordy , Friday, 31 May 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

yeah as i said before confessing this seems compulsive to me--it's like it didn't occur to him that this is something you can keep to yourself (and deal with it as a problem or not as you see fit). to make it public like this seems oddly aggressive, like holding eye contact with a stranger.

Actual feminist men see vaginas on legs and heads on shoulders.

I understand it's a reference to the previous sentence, but this still could have been worded better.

I personally have hair on my legs, a few scars...

i think it's revelent that there is a star trek: enterprise episode with the orion space girls where it is ultimately revealed that THEY and their PHEROMONES are to blame for making the menfolk so horny -- it is in fact a form of malicious mind control. stuff like this comes unfomfortably close to blaming the women "walking around bikinis" etc.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 31 May 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

i think marc loi is doing what he feels he needs to be doing in order to feel okay about himself, whatever that means for him personally.

Treeship, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:09 (ten years ago) link

or he is just a tedious dude looking for absolution from women for his male privilege and he is making the feminist struggle - which is about women - about himself.

maybe these things are the same thing.

for me at least its that this guy is essentially just an MRA. or a like mirror-image MRA, like the whole schtick--and the writer he quotes, schwyzer, is like this too--is totally consistent with the MRA vision of the world, he just personally slots himself in the "beta" position

this guy chris crass is one of my favorite writers on subjects like these, and one of the points he touches on is that *when among other men*, anti-sexist men should be working to lead their groups, organizations, and friends towards anti-sexist thinking and practices. what's worth considering in that process, though, is the "public face" of that kind of work--if you're not willing to be relatively openly vulnerable about your own struggles confronting sexism (or maybe even if you are), then the kind of leadership-of-males chris advocates can wind up looking an awful lot like marc loi.

that having been said, sometimes i'm not entirely sure exactly what about loi is being mocked itt. obviously in some of these posts he's practically lip-licking at women under a thin veneer of body positivity, and that's super creepy and crypto-misogynist, and in other posts he's just sort of odd. but like this post in particular doesn't seem all that outlandish to me. is there more context that would clear it up?

BIG HOOS aka the denigrated boogeyman (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Friday, 26 July 2013 16:02 (ten years ago) link

this post is fine. i think his early posts seem shitty to me, how he is chastising women for not living up to a "feminist" ideal of sexual morality that he has invented himself, while simultaneously deflecting criticisms from others by saying, essentially, "my ideas aren't coming from a place of insecurity because i can get laid, and my sexual virility entitles me to speak about these issues" which is as misogynistic as it gets, basically.

fervently nice (Treeship), Friday, 26 July 2013 16:07 (ten years ago) link

bc he is using his access to women as a status symbol which is more objectifying than 100 robin thicke videos. i'm thinking of the fourth post he wrote on that string of facebook comments at the top.

How is this guy misogynistic Treeship

badg, Friday, 26 July 2013 16:58 (ten years ago) link

i don't think he is a misogynist, but i think he's response to luke -- "i can get women off unlike you stfu" -- is pretty misogynistic, as is his expressed "disappointment" with women's behavior at a nightclub or whatever

fervently nice (Treeship), Friday, 26 July 2013 17:00 (ten years ago) link

it's the old schwyzer "women love me. i know it. they know it. and i know how to treat a woman right" that just seems paternalistic and more about one upping other guys than about helping women in any way.

maybe i am projecting something onto his statements, idk. he doesn't seem to be coming from a good place in those comments posted way on the top of the thread.

What are you going to do now?
Work on getting mentally healthy. I need to get my meds right. Second, I need to get my marriage right. There’s some bad shit that went down. I had an affair, which is very off-brand for me.

Off-brand ... as in out of character?
In that I’m supposed to be reformed. The affair was with someone in the same circles that you and I move in, so I have to protect her. But there’s a lot of gossiping. It may reach you. Don’t be surprised.

R'LIAH (goole), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:44 (ten years ago) link

But you do think feminism benefits from male writers.
I think we need good, brave, male voices who can take criticism and aren’t simply parroting the party line. I took Feminism 101. I know how to use all the big words. Look, intersectionality, I used it correctly in a sentence. I mean, fuck that. We need better than that.

mm, yes mr schyzer, you offer some trenchant critiques of the feminist establishment, indeed

It continually boggles my mind that guys will theorize and academize their feminism into a rote formula when the simple act of treating everyone you meet as kindly and respectfully as you would like to be treated yourself will get you about 80% of the way to not being an asshole.
