the Breaking Bad extras talk about having to *hire* the fake bills in the big pile in the storage locker and it costing more a dollar per dollar.

koogs, Monday, 14 April 2014 08:40 (ten years ago) link

that's interesting, I wonder if really accurate-looking fake money has all kinds of legal hoops to jump through that add to the cost.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 14 April 2014 08:52 (ten years ago) link

It cost more than $10 million or whatever to have that pile of fake money in the locker?

pplains, Monday, 14 April 2014 13:48 (ten years ago) link

They would have only had to have real-looking money for the top layer.

carl agatha, Monday, 14 April 2014 13:51 (ten years ago) link

The rest could be newspaper or whatever.

carl agatha, Monday, 14 April 2014 13:51 (ten years ago) link

Unless they're figuring in set-design and transportation into that equation in which, yeah, even using real money, it would've cost more money.

pplains, Monday, 14 April 2014 14:01 (ten years ago) link

don't remember the details but, yes, that $80M was just the top layer. all the money that gets thrown in bags was the same fake money. i guess the 'dollars' cost more than a dollar to hire but that doesn't scale to the higher denominations.

Q What were the logistics of setting up the scene with the huge pallets of money in the storage locker? It’s just such an unreal amount of cash.

A. That is actually a very expensive scene. It’s fake money. You’re not allowed to shoot real money. There’s a prop house in Los Angeles that makes it. If you look closely, it says “motion picture money” on it. It’s quite accurate and it’s illegal to copy their money even though it is fake. Our prop department rented all of their money. Our construction department built a block underneath that, and we put the fake money all around the block and put more stacks on top. It was really complicated and incredibly expensive. Every single dollar had to be accounted for. For weeks, you would walk to our production office and you would see these rooms of prop guys counting the money because there was so much of it.

koogs, Monday, 14 April 2014 16:09 (ten years ago) link

those fake pennies are for kids and, while you could boil a pile o' pennies, it's probably best not to use actual currency when dealing with five year olds.

As of 2011, it costs 2.41¢ US (or $0.0241 US Dollars (USD)) to make a penny, making the coin's face value less than its actual value. The cost first exceeded the face value of pennies in 2006.

Thanks to capitalism, all of these things have destroyed the planet irreparably.

Also capitalism has not invented mary poppins pockets, i call shenanigans.

everyone's posting the lamest "conservative images," right? these can't be the best, most insightful, most biting or withering or caustic material that the conservative movement has to offer.

i think a thread where ilxors tried to post the most salient conservative memes and infographics would be a good idea, and i'd be interested to see how it compares to this thread

een, Saturday, 19 April 2014 15:22 (ten years ago) link

My sense is that conservatives are much better at manipulating language than visual images. They fall back lazily on the usual patriotic symbols, like the flag and Mt Rushmore and saluting soldiers. Lately, they've been fetishizing Reagan's portrait, too.
