What is "Particularist"?

five six and (man alive), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 16:24 (eight years ago) link

any variation of Protestant belief that most human beings were rejected by God before they were even conceived

bombsover# (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 16:29 (eight years ago) link

i.e. humanity is divided between "the elect" and "fuck you"

pro-monarchy?

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 16:30 (eight years ago) link

monarchy is part of natural law and the great chain of being. of course these guys argue about "true" monarchs and shit but some kind of Hobbes-ian monarchy is their preferred political utopia because wealthy white people are naturally just better than everybody else

bombsover# (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 16:32 (eight years ago) link

the irony of the whole dark enlightenment is that it's based on a supremely cock-eyed and post-enlightenment reading of pre-18th century politics and philosophy imo - they claim to be rediscovering the thing they are making up, like neo-pagans etc

i don't think so? it's another way of stating their anti-universalism. no such thing as "human rights" or equality. particularism is a way of saying these people have these rules in this place and you can fuck off with your complaining about it

goole, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 16:40 (eight years ago) link

perhaps? Particularism does have that specific theological meaning tho, and i'd've thought belief in the Elect is what they're getting at, whether in purely religious or in general political terms.

let's be honest, whoever made that gif probly just picked the word up on a scumbag message board

that macro just seems like it thinks it's far smarter than it actually is and would corner me in a bar for ten minutes until my friend got there and i could ditch it

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 16:52 (eight years ago) link

afaict your scumbag message board types use it to mean that "races are different, genders are different, cultures are different," a nationalist (or just natalist) reading of "let everyone do their own thing, man!" ie that strict hierarchy is natural and any belief in equality is a form of social control

Key difference between small towns and the rest of America is they tend to not complain when a Walmart is built there.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 20 August 2015 17:39 (eight years ago) link

Maybe not now....

Upright Mammal (mh), Thursday, 20 August 2015 17:40 (eight years ago) link

Maybe that should say "tend not to complain as much". Anyways my point is this "small town" thing like there are mythical towns w individual personalities and not the US as one homogenous corporate landscape is bs.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 20 August 2015 17:43 (eight years ago) link

There are small towns with individual personalities.

carl agatha, Thursday, 20 August 2015 20:00 (eight years ago) link

Also the US is if not one homogeneous corporate landscape, there are belts of homogeneous corporate landscape. But within those belts are small towns that don't all feel the exact same.

And look I've flipped small town life the bird and intend to live in the city limits of Chicago until I choke on a slice of deep dish pizza or get crushed by a CTA train so I'm not romanticizing small towns, and the straw town the dingaling in that cartoon describes is definitely bs, but there are for sure noticeable and measurable differences between different small towns in the US.

carl agatha, Thursday, 20 August 2015 20:02 (eight years ago) link

I was joking last week about how college-ish towns with pedestrian malls are similar enough you feel like you could turn around a corner and come out in a different city

Upright Mammal (mh), Thursday, 20 August 2015 20:47 (eight years ago) link

i dunno man i'm a few weeks away from becoming a vermonter and VT is full of mythical lil towns

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 21 August 2015 01:06 (eight years ago) link

similar to each other, perhaps, but quite unlike the generic homogenous small town you're envisioning, adam

also, honest q: have you lived in or spent any amount of quality time in a small town? a handful of on this very board are from the same small midwestern town that, on the face of it, is the homogenous corporatized town you're tilting at and while it has def changed in the last fifteen or so years, it's still it's own weird (and not even that small) place. like i dunno if it still holds, but when i was in HS there was a very unique h4stings "accent" that was not really all that similar to the more generic "ya sure you betcha" minnesotan accent

fahkin a dood me an siebenaler are gonna get a sixer from his bruther and head down to the bottoms and do some fahkin chewin maybe stop by the churrch and whip some fahkin shitties in the parkin lot

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 21 August 2015 01:28 (eight years ago) link

Not sure, I grew up in various suburban cities w populations under 10k, maybe that isn't really a small town. The only things that stood out in my mind as particular to those towns vs other places when I left were several cherished budget movie theaters that closed down a long time ago.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 21 August 2015 01:32 (eight years ago) link

Also most of my teenage years the city I lived in was wholly defined by the mega church that I despised.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 21 August 2015 01:32 (eight years ago) link

I don't mind people who have strong convictions that aren't mine, I only care when they act like I'm _wrong_ for living differently and that their way is the only _right_ way. Or if they try to claim their kids shouldn't know other things exist, because by denying the ways of the world or even knowledge of how other people live, they're somehow doing people a service.

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 21 August 2015 01:39 (eight years ago) link

I mean, I live in a smaller- to mid-sized city and there's at least once church congregation that was trying to get a suburban school district to change the reading curriculum or the contents of the high school library. Really? I'm cool with reading all kinds of things that don't fit with my world view, especially when they make me appreciate or reexamine why I believe what I do. And schools and libraries are exactly the place for that sort of thing.

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 21 August 2015 01:42 (eight years ago) link

A lot of American "small towns" are meth-addled hellholes.
