Los Angeles, April 8, 1984- Former Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher Dock Ellis says he was under the influence of LSD when he pitched a 1970 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres.

Ellis, now co-ordinator of an anti drug program in Los Angeles, said he didn't know until six hours before his June 12, 1970 no hitter that he was going to pitch.

"I was in Los Angeles, and the team was playing in San Diego , but I didn't know it. I had taken LSD..... I thought it was an off-day, that's how come I had it in me. I took the LSD at noon. At 1pm, his girlfriend and trip partner looked at the paper and said, "Dock, you're pitching today!"

"That's when it was $9.50 to fly to San Diego. She got me to the airport at 3:30. I got there at 4:30, and the game started at 6:05pm. It was a twi-night doubleheader.

I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria.

I was zeroed in on the (catcher's) glove, but I didn't hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times.

The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me."

The Pirates won the game, 2-0, although Ellis walked eight batters. It was the highpoint in the baseball career of one of the finer pitchers of his time, and arguably, one of the greatest achievements in the history of sports.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay. I had never read any accounts that emphasized the cost of the plane ticket. Still, a flight on LSD sounds way more intimidating that a drive down the 405.

The first time I dropped acid (too much), it didn't get fun until a few hours in. Then I started seeing strands of red twine connecting everything from floor to ceiling in a web and could feel them on my skin when I moved. And if I lay on my side, I could see the room fill with thread - one half of one eye would get fuzzy as it filled, and when it covered my entire field of vision everything started flowing into everything else.

pure shit aint around anymore anywhere. on the real.

chaki, Thursday, 6 March 2008 23:12 (sixteen years ago) link

what do you mean by "pure shit"? purely-synthesized stuff? because adding adulterants to blotter doesn't make sense from an economic standpoint, assuming a scenario of some greedy-ass acid chemists

dell, Thursday, 6 March 2008 23:14 (sixteen years ago) link

liquid stuff is what is around much nowadays and that can never be trusted. when on paper its either lsd or something else. with the absence of lsd chemists since the big busts in the early 2000's, paper has been pretty rare.

chaki, Thursday, 6 March 2008 23:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Pickard and Apperson

The decline in prevalence of LSD is correlated with (but not necessarily caused by) the arrest of two chemists, William Leonard Pickard, a Harvard educated organic chemist, and Clyde Apperson. According to DEA reports, black market LSD availability dropped by 95% after the two were arrested in 2000. These arrests were a result of one of the largest LSD manufacturing raids in DEA history.[74] Pickard was an alleged member of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love group that produced and sold LSD in California during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is believed he had links to other "cooks" associated with this group — an original source of the drug back in the 1960s — and his arrest may have forced other operations to cease production, leading to the large decline in street availability.

The DEA claims that these two individuals were responsible for supplying a third of the LSD in the United States and maybe the world,[75] however, the government quoted seizure amounts in connection with this case have been seriously questioned.[76]

In November of 2003, Pickard was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, and Apperson was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment without parole, after being convicted in Federal Court of running a large scale LSD manufacturing operation out of several clandestine laboratories, including a former missile silo near Wamego, Kansas.[74]

chaki, Thursday, 6 March 2008 23:20 (sixteen years ago) link

oh, ok.

when it's on paper, though, it's pretty much lsd or nothing, though, from what i understand. if only because nothing soluble onto paper in such small amounts would have any effect. strychnine myths, etc...

i remember when those dudes got busted in 2000 who supposedly supplied the majority of lsd to the states. it was weird when i started hearing a few years ago that it was available again.

dell, Thursday, 6 March 2008 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Stanley believes that the natural human diet is a totally carnivorous one, thus making it a zero-carb diet, and that all vegetables are toxic.[1]. He claims to have eaten almost nothing but meat, eggs, butter and cheese since 1959 and that he believes his body has not aged as much as the bodies of those who eat a more "normal" diet. He is convinced that insulin, released by the pancreas when carbohydrates are ingested, is the cause of much damage to human tissue and that diabetes mellitus is caused by the ingestion of carbohydrates.

I'm giving you all the green light to drop acid, so long as you have the free time to ride it out. What's the worst that can happen? You feel a little crazy for a while and then eventually get back to feeling normal? I mean, it took the Manson family months of daily acid trips before they ended up going on a mass murder spree.
