charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Big Star a lot. And Alex C.

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the bridge on this song is so simple but so perfect... such a set-up for that solo. why did i sell my Fender XII!??!?!?!?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You needed more cash to buy materials for the giant ILM strawman you are building?

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"I like strawmen!!!
There are some nice strawmen!!!"

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i missed seeing "the wicker man" the other day.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

excellent soundtrack... is there a thread on that?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno, probably.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"September Girls" seems decidedly un-noize.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

that's because gygax is just a indie!

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Some of my best friends like Indie!"

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

there's that one kinda noize section in "don't lie to me"

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Holocaust?

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY DO SO MUCH

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

THE INTRO TO THE INDIA SONG, LOOPED OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"downs" is kinda noize with the bouncing basketball.

i like how in "don't lie to me" that oscillator kicks in, with the one guitar playing the lead riff, and things get crazy.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

alex's gf playing the mellotron on "kanga roo" employs kind of that future-primitive/outsider approach to musics.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

not too mention the fact that this "tender slow ballad" is drenched in feedback.

Take care not to hurt yourself
Beware of the need for help
You might need too much
And people are such
Take care, please, take care

Some people read idea books
And some people have pretty looks
But if your eyes are wide
And all words aside
Take care, please, take care

This sounds a bit like goodbye
In a way it is I guess
As I leave your side
I’ve taken the air
Take care, please, take care

this opinion interests me.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I just think it has this real sense of menace and depravation and ill-will that is unmatched by anything else they did. Like, Third is real dark and melancholy and whatnot but also more resigned. I dunno, I think Radio City is definitely my favorite at this point. Maybe been reading too many of Edd S. Hurt's posts or something but I think he's right...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Mostly OTM, a lot of the subversion carries through on even the brief vignettes like "Oh Dana" and "Big Black Car".

hehe, all those girls they come and go. i think i heard on ILM or somewhere he recently dedicated 'thirteen' to michael jackson? alex chilton = totally noize. i think i need to get 'like flies on sherbert.'

fauxhemian (fauxhemian), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

yeah,,, so i, uh, downloaded this song,,,, and i still don't think i'd like them. but am kinda impressed w/the fact that it came out in 74 when i thought these guys were a late 70s/ early 80s band.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 05:50 (nineteen years ago)

get holocaust or kangaroo, then

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 06:02 (nineteen years ago)

fauxhemian you totally need to get 'like flies on sherbert'. jaxon 'september girls' is probably the most well known big star song (or at least it was until 'that 70s show') but there's tons others that are better imo. there's very little non-bootleg/reunion/live material - i guess the rhino thing w/ the first two albums and then sister lovers/big star 3rd - two cd's worth of material in total so it's a an easy group to casually check out and simultaneously get it all. i'm trying to think what's the most disco big star song (they were pretty not disco) - 'you get what you deserve' maybe??? (jody?) i could TOTALLY imagine a space disco cover of 'don't lie to me' a la chilly's 'for your love' or whoever did 'have a cigar' (maybe that was chilly and someone else did 'for your love')(jody?).

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

who would you choose, real kids or big star?

just called them out of the blue and they were like "hey why not"

most disco maybe = "When My Baby's Beside Me" (handclaps on chorus goodness)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

I bought JOdy Stephens a vegetarian Subway sandwich at that show, Renard. And I was on MTV.

And then we all got fired.

I've still never heard Big Star. I just clicked because it said "gurlz" in the title.

this works. i think the group that did "have a cigar" is called rosebud. i have an mp3 somewhere.

it's funny.
on that big star is #1 record underrated (overrated?) thread the other week i was talkin' about how it might be the time for me to get into big star, now alex chilton is dead, we're listening to chilton/box tops/big star all day at work, and i DO like about 1/2 the stuff. the slower stuff mostly. some of the stuff i'd known before. 3rd is good. sigh. but i feel like a poser. AND the most recent person to try to get me into big star is this chick i totally fell for who has no time for me anymore. sigh.

ian, Thursday, 18 March 2010 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

Radio City is a perfect record imo. Just fell so hard for Big Star.
Fuck a timing.
