Are there nerds and goths and jocks who all eat their lunch in little groups?

does the popular girl always go out with the captain of the football team?

are there humiliating prom embarassments?

Does everyone get a locker to put pictures of their crush inside the door of?

i went to inner city school. we used to have race riots and stuff.

dronez are not ours to eat, dronez are not ours to wear (smile), Saturday, 12 March 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to public high school for two years and hippy high school for two years. public high school sucks and is more or less as the movies make it out to be, except less funny. hippy school was rad. the drummer from Arab on Radar taught there, and so did the dude who played saxophone on that one Olneyville Sound System album. i go to take classes like "trash or treasure?" where we would walk around the city picking up trash and then turning it into sculptures. also, my physics & math teacher was named Steve Martin. I smoked weed every day at lunch, because we were allowed to leave the building and do whatever for 45 minutes (as opposed to public high school where lunch=25 minutes stuck in a shitty cafeteria .)

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 12 March 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

as opposed to public high school where lunch=25 minutes stuck in a shitty cafeteria

Sure, that's acceptable ... in elementary school!

What the hell?

No wonder you hated it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 12 March 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

that and getting beat up all the time, yeah.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 12 March 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I beat someone up, when I was a kid.

Cantor Hymie (nordicskilla), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

they dont really make private school movies, do they?
I mean outside of boarding school period pieces.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it seems like a lot of eighties late nite cable sex romps i wanna say were set in them, or like at an 'academy' or something

noizem duke (noize duke), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

OC and Stiggs, was that a private school or just a public school in a rich neighborhood?

i went to high school for kids that were kicked out of the regular high school but it sounds like ians hippie school. we smoked alot of weed and called our teachers by their first name.

charleston charge (chaki), Sunday, 13 March 2005 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeremy, Andrew and I all went to a Quaker school. Like 20% of the teachers had hyphenated last name. There were tons of rich jewz there!

green uno skip card (ex machina), Sunday, 13 March 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

there are two st. francis alumni on this very bored.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 13 March 2005 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

We spent most of high school in the Relgion/History/Drama department lounge on THE GREEN COUCH which was stolen from who knows where. It was pretty fun; we essentially had our own private living room.

green uno skip card (ex machina), Sunday, 13 March 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

chaki: many of the kids at hippy school were also kicked out of their previous schools.. teachers first names, etc.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 13 March 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

my school had some pretty brutal fights. one girl brought bleach into school in a water bottle and dumped the whole thing in another girl's face and blinded her. high school fight stories may be another thread in itself.

our public school was pretty normal except for the florida twist to the demographic... so you were likely a new yorker with an occasional southern drawl, a jewish/cuban/puerto rican/dominican GF, a best friend who was a black dude from new york too, yet meanwhile your spent a lot of time getting messed with by native black dudes that keep mistaking you for the redneck kkk members you didn't realize you hung out with and played paintball with cause they surfed dude and smoked the kinder, gentler plants. and if you're like me, you spent most of your time between pissing retirees off skateboarding behind the supermarket and bodyboarding down hills on a golf course during a good rain. (every 3pm every summer day.)

our work load was a joke... i could fuck around and get Bs. college was a slap in the face like that. hewwo werk! i lost all my scholarships freshman year to street fighter ii.

I loved my high school experience, I really did. It was awesome. I got laid more often and with different partners at age 18 than at any other time in my life. I don't say that to brag or anything -- if anything, it's indicative of how progressively unexciting my life has gotten as time goes on -- but more an indication of how bonkers high school life was.

It really *was* kind of teen-flick like, in a lot of ways. Like, we totally had John Hughes-movie-type parties. I even hosted a couple myself when my parents went out of town. Total insanity. Massive, MASSIVE alcohol consumption. Pot smoking at lunch. Hell, I got drunk before school a few times, when I started getting a ride to school from this senior named Mike Cox in his truck. He liked to blast his Steve Miller Band tape in the mornings -- hey, it beat riding the bus. And he would pull out this fifth of Bacardi -- that's all the dude drank, Bacardi -- yeccchh!! anyway, he'd pull the fifth out from under his seat and turn at look at me and grin, and then we'd both take big old pulls on the thing. I usually didn't sober up until around 3rd hour class or so...

And we were by no means an anomaly! That's what small midwestern nothingness does to people, even kids. I grew up in a town of about 25K. Funny thing is, though, it was fairly diverse. We had an absolutely huge hispanic population, puerto ricans and mexicans. Lots of children of the migrant farmers who came up to find work in the county. There was a lot of farmland around. But yeah, they were totally cool peeps, loved hanging out with those guys. And they had great weed.

I liked high school. a lot. our cheerleaders and football players were kind of ugly, though.

S!monB!rch (Carey), Sunday, 13 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to a midwest school of nothingness too but it wasn't really that fun. The first two years I was drunk all week and on acid for the weekends, but then I alienated all my drug friends and became a nerd. Nerdy girls in the midwest don't put out.

"Bible Belt"

also, i actually had my lunch money stolen. once this kid punched me in the face who everyone said fucked his cousin.

where did you grow up stormY/??

most of indiana = shithole

I wish I went to hippy school, I think

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Sonny, I grew up in Adrian, Michigan. small town, but it had its charms, I suppose. when we wanted to go to the "big city" we would drive to Ann Arbor or Toledo, Ohio. I honestly can't imagine being a teen without a driver's license. But I guess if you grow up in a big city it's not necessary.

where in Indiana were you??

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 13 March 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

high school sucked.

we had an 'arts' school though where you could take an elective for two periods, i took a film class for three years there. definitely more fun than my regular high school.

green uno skip card (ex machina), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but that reminds me that P3T3 L@R$0N, owner of Bulb Records, also lives in ADRIAN!! He apparently moved there a couple years ago. I've never met the man before! I have no idea on god's green earth why he moved to Adrian, but he did!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't he a high school science teacher?

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 13 March 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he? I honestly had no idea. That would make sense though. I mean, as an explanation as to why he moved there.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

he is a REALLY NICE DUDE. we hung out and i made fun of him for wearing an 02909 shirt now that he lives in MI. i was wearing an oss shirt. there were high fives

green uno skip card (ex machina), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's a science teacher. I could be misinformed. Maybe it's history, or maybe it's nothing at all. What I'm trying to say is, I can't point to any DOCUMENTATION of this. I just think it's what I heard...

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 14 March 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to a mostly black arts high school (that is, an arts high school made up of majority black students [by which I mean most of the students were black, not that there were a bunch of individual students who were each mostly-but-not-all black] not a high school wherein the black arts are taught.

I don't think my experienced looked much like any movie (Fame is the closest, but still a far cry). As one of a handful of white kids, I was almost never given a hard time, but some kids sort of treated me like I was in a different caste. Still, I had plenty of black friends, even if the number was disproportionate considering the school.

I came in early and often stayed late for jazz band practice. The first 2/3 of the day were devoted to your run-of-the-mill academics classes with the last third being devoted to arts (in my case, guitar class, music theory, etc.) There were also visual arts kids (who often had a side-gig of writing graf), literary media kids (usually spoken-word poet types), dancers (often gay people who were glad to escape their neighborhood high schools), actors (sometimes in the same category as dancers), and us musicians. The environment was relatively creative and tolerant. We were in the Georgetown area of DC, and we often cut class to go to record shops, skate stores, coffee places, or whatever else.

There were always concerts or art exhibitions going on, which was kind of cool. I played in a jazz combo with some of the other students and made money by playing at ritzy private parties.

"Moses Brown alumnus Ed Ellington, class of '64 and grandson of Duke Ellington, is our musician-in-residence this year. Ed and several colleagues conducted a second workshop with the middle and upper school jazz ensembles on February 15. The musicians return for a third workshop in April, and will also take the stage with our students in a free public concert. "

Like the movies?

depends on the movie

Are there nerds and goths and jocks who all eat their lunch in little groups?

yes. some crossover between teh nerds and goths.

does the popular girl always go out with the captain of the football team?

yes. until she has a sudden change of heart and decides to favor one of the nerds. heartbreak and hilarity ensue.

are there humiliating prom embarassments?

always. though nowadays they involve video phones, groupsex, and filesharing.

Does everyone get a locker to put pictures of their crush inside the door of?

no you do not put a picture of yr crush on your locker door cuz everyone sees it and mocks you. the inside of yr locker door is reserved for pics of movie idols and senses fall out boy.

Are there those cabinets with trophies inside?

yeah, what of it? they've got 'em at hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry too.

and hall security people?

we call them police officers here.
