Should I pay $40 to go see Acid Mothers Temple, Terry Riley & Matmos on Saturday?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

sure!

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm not convinced.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

where is that? I haven't seen that. I've seen Terry Riley twice and he was great.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

matmos will be good, amt (playing "in c") could be good, terry riley should be good, royce hall at ucla is really beautiful, i'm going. there's like a 30% chance that it will be a staggeringly great show. i hope it's loud and wish i were more convincing.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

oh...so it's not in NY! I just assumed it was in NY.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Terry Riley,AMT,and Matmos sounds like a good night to me.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

we get the occasional interesting show out here in the sticks.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Terry Riley will be playing keyboards along with AMT in the performance of 'In C'

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I've seen AMT twice and Riley once (Riley was great, AMT was good once, bad once). But this seems like something more special than any of these artists taken individually. On the other hand it's $40 and I don't like going to Royce Hall. Plus I have pretty much the exact situation joked at above since I'm already going to see Dungen tomorrow and I would have to leave the gf home alone on a Sat. night with the baby. Hmmm.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

In part one of the interview with Terry Riley in Dream Magazine, George Parsons asks Riley if he's heard the AMT "In C." He says something along the lines of "I have, and it is pretty good, but would have been much better if I played with them." So this seems really cool to me.
I don't think I've ever spent 40 dollars on a show, though.
Oh, there was that solo Neil Young thing.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

$40 is pricey, but sounds like a memorable occasion.

msp (mspa), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

that is awesome. they should cut up a photo of LaMonte Young at the end like Sinead O'Connor did on SNL.

mookiƩ wilson (mookie wilson), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

You're thinking of Tony Conrad. Riley has no beef with Young.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

"In the twentieth century, the destination of the evolving ideology of science became clear. Natural science marches inexporable to the conclusion that reality has no place for 'us,' for 'our subjectivity.' 'We' are found to be the mistake which must be eliminated. In other words, the magisterial cognitive positions of contemporary culture amount to an unrelieved 'neo-behavioralism.' The magisterial and operative positions are the ones which matter."

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Don't see Dungdn.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

oh no, what happened. my friend listened to them on KCRW. said he'd prolly like to see them in person or on record, but it didn't come across too well on the radio

YOU ALMOST STABBED YOURSELF IN THE FACE LIKE A HULKAMANIAC (jaxon), Thursday, 29 September 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Eh, they were kind of weak I thought. I mean, they were good but nothing incredible. When they did the jammy parts it's like they were aiming for Zeppelin and Floyd but came across more like Chocolate Watchband or Vanilla Fudge. Not that that's a bad thing, it was just more cartoony-retro-psych than I expected, like seeing one of the bands on the set of an AIP hippy movie. Their songs are totally great but as a band I didn't think they had the power of say Comets on Fire or Acid Mothers Temple.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 29 September 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

i went to Acid Mother's last night. it was pretty fucking intense, but honestly it got kinda samey and exhausting after a while. i think they played 4 songs in two hours.

when dungen played, did they have a full drum set and did the lead dude have an electric guitar? i went to the Amoeba instore today and they only had bongos and the lead guy had an acoustic guitar. it was really low energy and really boring :( i'm too tired to go to that show tonight

JaXoN (jaxon), Sunday, 2 October 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes, full drum set. The lead singer played flute on a couple of songs, electric piano on one song, organ on one song (the Vanilla Fudge-y piece) and strummed guitar on a few numbers. Most of the type he danced around with a tambourine and did his best Robert Plant boogie.

UART variations (ex machina), Monday, 29 January 2007 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

your friend is about right.

a1= kind of a shithole but popular
sound library = expensive but almost like a curated art gallery (map is out of date, its in south LES now)
good records = sort of like sound library but smaller and less emphasis on "black music"

i figure he'd like all three. also east village academy and wburg academy (hi ian), if he wants disco and r+b, there's plenty there. he might like tropicalia in furs if he likes brazilian and has money to burn.

The 2 began working on tracks for their never finished album in 1992. Initially only having two songs recorded, they chose to drive to Miami to unveil their new identities by seeking radio play at Power 96. However, they weren't sure if the two songs recorded were enough, so they pondered for days on what the third song could be. While listening to a song entitled 'Da Mad Scientist' by Bass Patrol, they heard a vocal sample they could not identify. Mocking the cadence of sample over and over led to the phrase "who let the dogs out", which prompted them to make that the chorus of their new song. They took a stack of tapes to South Florida for radio play, club play, and to shop for a record deal. Eight years later, B-Naste heard the Baha Men's version on the radio, which has begun an intense investigation by the group.

It is rumored that PappaWheelie was the original lead vocalist for the band Limp Bizkit; this is an extreme exaggeration.

After PappaWheelie coined the term ElectroDiscoPunk (or EDP), Larry Tee, a minor member of the collective made a move to abandon his trademarked Electroclash term and replace it ElectroDiscoPunk.

its not really a percent thing. if it's like four dudes with a big truck working several hours, then unfortunately you should kick over $100 for them to share. also remember to buy a bunch of bottles of water for them so they can't try to split while the clock is running.
