SPACE IS THE PLACE

Foundation Maeght Nights Volumes 1 and/or 2 was the first thing I heard by him that made me flip out 100%

But after that, they all started to make sense.

The Space is the Place film is also a good introduction

anyone seen that new Phil Niblock DVD documentary yet?

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "The Magic City" a good place to start? Some people say it's his best album.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Niblock thing is short but sweet.
"The Magic Sun."

My intro was the two Heliocentric Worlds volumes on ESP. checked em out of my school's college radio station when I first got there. There is tons of open space on these things, to go along with the group's trademark density. Very moody stuff. Long tracks with tympanis and wood block percussion and droning trombones and bass clarinets and other madness. If you like, say, No Neck Blues Band style neo-psych I recommend checking em out. sound samples! --

I really like the "Concert for the Comet Kohoutek" lp.

It's got a great range of styles, might be a good place to start.

Some of the late, really "straight" sounding stuff like his version of "Stars Fell on Alabama" = really great too.

mmm I am loading Heliocentric Worlds onto the iPod...

Is "Sun Ra and the Funkadelics" actually a Sun Ra + Funkadelic collab?

>"Concert for the Comet Kohoutek"

mmm that is good one. very similar in range to the Foundation Maeghts: extended moog workouts, catchy showtunes, vocal freakouts, big band romps & full orchestral skree.

1971-3 in general were good years.

lots of knowledge on the ILM thread.

noisiest Sun Ra: Strange Strings

(x-post to Barry, Magic City didn't make an immediate impact, have only listened twice a long time ago, should listen again)

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

all of those are good choices. im particularly fond of the two Actuel moog freak out Sun Ra records.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I started with "Cosmic Tones/Art Forms". I still haven't heard "Space is the Place".

I would say get the "A Joyful Noise" DVD before the "Space is the Place" DVD.

I got the job because I was so mean, while somehow appearing so kind. (AaronHz), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)
