jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

what the fuck do they put in the kid's water these days that makes them get into cool shit so young? (i'm talking to you ian and jon).

i was listening to the dorkiest shit in highschool and even through college. i guess it's because my highschool was 70% black that my upbringing was on hip hop and not "indie/experimental" shit.

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

MAYBE YOU FORGOT BUT I LIKED SKA UP UNTIL LIKE 1998

BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's called 'the internet'

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

for me it was grazing through the radio station records when i was in college.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, me too, totally. I was just trying to offer an explanation for kids now.

But yeah, I think I read the Lester Bangs book when I was in 10th or 11th grade, and I just DREAMED of hearing all of these wild records he talked about! The Godz! The Fugs! "Metal Machine Music"! Sir Lord Baltimore! even something like Charles Mingus! I didn't have access to those records, man. Shit like that wasn't reissued then, or at least wasn't very readily available where I grew up.

So yeah, when I got to college it was like FINALLY I can hear all of this stuff. I took home like 5 vinyl records per week every week from the radio station, made tons and tons of cassette copies, basically blew my mind open.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

me no listen to music until college. up to college i was extremely disinterested, assaulted on a constant basis by howard jones, motley crue, the cure, bon jovi, mtv schlock, etc in small rural town.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i got into the troggs and godz courtesy of lester, opening up the gates.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought that by going to music school for college, i would meet cool people with interesting musical tastes who would expose me to all sorts of awesomeness, but instead they were all non-fun dorks... and the new music people (the only ones listening to anything out of the ordinary) were snobby and didn't want to let anyone else into their circle of pretend importance.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

do you get a bunch of this kinda shit?

OTM. And yeah, Psychotic Reactions & Carburetor Dung was also helpful.. so was having a cool uncle who was into Pearls Before Swine & Flying Burrito Brothers. Also helpful was growing up in Providence and hearing stuff like Arab on Radar at a young age (before I had a driver's license.)

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 25 March 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"You Must Be Logged-In to do That!

MySpace is FREE, But You Must Be a Member to Use That Feature"

it's not worth it is it? i hate these kind of profile/avatar/journal sites but i like looking at idiots.

amon (eman), Friday, 25 March 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

myspace is better than friendster because there are more funny roffle pictures. but it's still essentially useless/worthless.

WHERE'S OLD SKULL AT?

BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i got into hardcore in 7th or so grade from skateboarding. but of course, that was via copies of copies of copies of somebody's big sister's tapes. (p2p!) but in our area, beyond that, the music offerings were r&b/hip-hop and classic rock, which i listen to a lot of both.

i listened to silly things like this "Progressive Rock" radio show and mtv's pre-nirvana offerings... dave kendal and ricki rakman... but not until college did i really get access to record stores that went beyond alternative and modern rock major label stuff.

hell tho, i remember in college driving a hour to this weird store that would rent you rare records for the day just to be able to hear this totally weird band called Can. "they found their singer on the street! holy shit, get out the w33d! nOW!"

msp (msp), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)
