NOISY CD IS PLAYBACK PAYBACK
By MARIANNE GARVEY
May 1, 2005 -- There's a new CD for sale — and it's not music to anyone's ears.
It's called the "Revenge CD" and if your neighbors from hell play their music too loud, move furniture in the middle of the night, or argue at the top of their lungs, pop this in the stereo and it's payback time.
The CD has 20 different sounds that New Yorkers dread most — such as a loud, annoying, constant drill, or the irritating sound of high heels pacing back and forth on a hardwood floor.
And those are the least painful of the bunch.
There's also the bowling alley, the freight train, the blaring orgasm and — the old New York staple — the block-long traffic jam noise.
Tom Meyvis, an NYU professor, said he bought the CD specifically for a psychology class he's teaching to see how much noise people can take before they go insane.
He said he even has instructions on the best way to use the CD.
"I find that if you use it and play it [constantly], people will get used to the noise," Meyvis said. "But if you play it loud, then take a short break, then play it again, then break, people can't handle it. It becomes unbearable."
Those seeking revenge don't have to exact it on themselves: The CD comes with a set of earplugs so you can sleep or read in peace.

Speaking of noise, one of my cubicular neighbors is pumping air into a large ball for some reason. The repetitive whooshing IS annoying.
Why are some noises annoying, while some aren't?

I had really annoying neighbors once in college, the guy in the bedroom next to mine w/ paper thin walls would practice drums until 5am
one day I turned my speakers around, turned the stereo up terrifyingly loud, put on 'metal machine music', pressed play and ran, the CD player took five seconds to spin up, the sound of the music chasing me out the door was physically shocking
the adjacent wall was covered with mounted cassette racks; when I came back, the tapes were all over the room and there were large cracks in the paint, I can only imagine what their side of the wall looked like
