DEAR DREWISH:

DID U RIDE A VESPA IN "ROME"?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 29 May 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I went to a dinner party of Roman people and we wound up talking about Italian names and I told them that in America there is a racist, disparaging term for Italian-Americans and that the term is just "Guido" and the Romans found this hilariously funny and kept calling each other "a bunch of Guidos" all night long.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 29 May 2005 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Drew, do you speak Italian?

Did you drink espresso every morning? If so, tell us how strong it was.

Did you remember to tell the pope that I said "hi"?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 May 2005 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

what did you "do as a roman"?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 29 May 2005 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

No, sadly I speak enough Spanish to lead to countless awkward attempts at Italish and false-cognate misunderstandings.

I did drink espresso and had some very strong doppios that pulled me from very asleep to very awake within seconds, rather like the hit of crack-cocaine.

I forgot. (the hot gay gossip in Rome is that the new pope has a thing going on with his ex-secretrary Josef Clemens, ooh la la)

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 29 May 2005 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

did you do any of that ol' italian cocaine?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 29 May 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK A VESPA, DID YOU RIDE A PISTA?

ddb (ddb), Sunday, 29 May 2005 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 May 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

how was paper received?

milton parker (Jon L), Sunday, 29 May 2005 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

DID YOU EAT GOOD FOOD? TELL US ABOUT THE FOOD.

ALSO: DID YOU GO TO ART MUSEUM STUFF? WAS IT FUN OR LAME?

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 29 May 2005 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

what are italian clubs like, and did you get to see any pigna / nature records people

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Sunday, 29 May 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't do any yayo/llello/cocaina, did have grappa and Succo (a very strong herbal liqueur) and plenty of vino rosso, didn't ride a vespa (alas) but I did drive around in my friend Nino's car all around the perimeter of Rome from the EUR (fascist concrete suburb) to the Testaccio (opposite end).

The food:

So fucking good. Amazing food was a near constant. Highlights included a risotto con crema di scampi, intense Bocconcino di agnello (lil veal bites in a spicy/lemony sauce), a really amazing meal of cavallo (horse meat) in Trieste- it was just pounded flat, torn into strips and served with lots of olive oil and rosemary, very delicious, a smoked wheel of ricotta cheese where the skin bubbled black and stiff and crispy and the inner consistency got all granular, some riso (rice) flavored gelato, too many great pastas to recall but one in Ferrara was a ravioli stuffed with pumpkin and served in a spicy duck ragu, and that was intense. Weirdest/grossest food: Cassata, a Sicilian dessert item, sort of like a hyper-marzipan, basically the sweetest almond paste i've ever had, totally too much and overwhelming.

The Italian clubs I went to were either tornados of way decadent techno for straight people (Dissonanze festival), or ghastly gay bars complete with everyone in way too tight clothing and progressive house covers of Genesis songs (I'm talkin' "Invisible Touch", people). The techno was good, the gay bars were lame.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 29 May 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 29 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 07:26 (twenty years ago)

If stealing and recontextualizing cut-uppery is your bag, Porest is the one to watch for now though, damn, have y'all heard "Tourrorists"? Sheesh. Cut ups that cut close to home, very pointed and political and good.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Porest is joining Chopping Channel for live radio sometime in April

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 10:11 (twenty years ago)

gritty sanskrit (sanskrit), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:21 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Drew,

is there any reason to choose the show on the 18th over the 19th?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

Do you want us young n fresh or older n wiser? I'd say that we might be more hung over on the 18th as the 17th of July is my 37th birthday (oh shit) and it's our homecity show and stuff. So maybe the 19th by a nosehair . . .

Drew Daniel, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

oh hey, my birthday is the 18th!

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 11:42 (seventeen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)
