Never a band to follow formulaic musical styles, Polvo once again shakes things up with its twisted song structures of multiple tempos and intricate, distorted guitars. Today's Active Lifestyles goes from the raucous "Thermal Treasure," with its tangled guitars, into the meandering "Lazy Comet," with its singsong, rhyming lyrics, to the spare, melancholy "My Kimono," which features a solo by guitarist Ash Bowie. And that's just the album's first three songs! The band experiments with several ideas throughout the album, and each concept is successful. The album ranges from cascading guitar solos in "Stinger (Five Wigs)" to the straightforward "Tilebreaker" to the catchy, rolling, keyboard-punctuated "Time Isn't on My Side." Overall, it's an excellent album with many layers. You can listen to it over and over again and still catch new things going on in every song.

Ah, North Carolina. Can anyone explain why it's been such a hotbed of original-sounding music? Why every year there's a new crop from the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill triangle? Sure, it has lots of colleges, but there's gotta be more to it. Never mind the silly band name and LP title, here's a two-guitar quartet that takes a normal starting point -- whirling, loud, harsh guitar pop with an unpredictable edge -- and adds a bawling, full-throated vocalist named Eric Bachmann, who himself sounds like he's been singing all night and his voice is a little sore (just enough to make him sound like he really means it). Or like Ric Ocasek singing his lungs out for a change, on top of a roaring, screaming loud band. Which means if they're on the same bill with Dillon Fence, DF is the polite, ringing hook band, while these guys are gonna jump-start the keg party. Music to sing to and bounce off the walls to at the same time, with all that Southern quirky dedication and sincerity and congeniality that make us love the place so much.

i liked polvo records enough to see them live back in the day, but i don't recall thinking they were that great live.

Ô¿Ô (eman), Sunday, 17 July 2005 16:50 (eighteen years ago) link

they were intense.

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 17 July 2005 16:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I remember selling my Dillon Fence cd in college and the record store dude warning me that it was out of print and that I would have a hard time getting it back. I was like "is that why there are so many Guadalcanal Diary cds back there?"

i remember polvo having some good and bad moments live. i remember thinking they were going to be much more intense than they were. that was weird.

the one time i clearly remember seeing the loaf was during icky mettle times and frankly, it was pretty much full on indie rock SLAYAGE.

POLVO >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> AOL (although their first few singles/eps were classic).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Meaning: AOL was a 1-trick pony (a good trick but they milked it dry) whereas Polvo's first 3-4 albums were completely out-of-left-field unprecendented and incredibly chaotic.

AOL wrote songs you could SCREAM in the car

POLVO wrote songs you smoked weed to

dmr, Saturday, 28 March 2009 16:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I love the archers of loaf so much. Some of the best shows I've ever seen.

Saw Crooked Fingers a couple years ago and they had the Archers bassist with him and played a couple old songs. It was so great.

i'd love to see an archers show. the polvo reunion last year was a rager.

Did not go to Polvo reunion show even though RS loves them and they're one of the few bands I actually introduced him to. Regret not going. :-(
